Duty Station: Jinja, Uganda

 

About Organisation:

Kakira Sugar Limited (KSL) is a leading sugar manufacturer in Uganda. KSL boasts of two sugar estates, one in Kakira – Jinja and the other in Kayunga.

 

Job Summary:   The Packaging Supervisor is responsible for leading the production team to execute the production plan efficiently, ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards while driving continuous improvement and operational excellence.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

General Management

  • Ensure timely availability of packaging materials and consumables.
  • Optimize the use of people and resources to meet delivery, quality, and safety standards.
  • Develop, update, and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all production tasks.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the factory and ensure equipment safety, calibration, and functionality.
  • Monitor changeovers, line setups, and ensure adherence to production plans.
  • Record and monitor key production metrics such as downtime, quality control, and fuel consumption.
  • Maintain and improve production throughput and efficiency in line with key performance indicators (KPIs):
  • Safety: 0 accidents or lost-time injuries.
  • Quality: 100% compliance, 0 defects.
  • Efficiency: 95% production efficiency.
  • Waste: Less than 2%.
  • Plan adherence: 95%.
  • Handle stock control transactions and segregate non-conforming materials.
  • Continuous Improvement and Compliance
  • Drive the culture of “Right First Time and On Time.”
  • Conduct root cause analyses and implement corrective actions for incidents or inefficiencies.
  • Proactively seek opportunities for process improvements to enhance productivity and customer service.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, health, and environmental regulations, including ISO standards.

People Management

  • Train and coach team members in operational and technical tasks.
  • Align team members with organizational goals and performance expectations.
  • Promote a high-performance culture by providing continuous feedback and support.
  • Manage time and attendance, ensuring compliance with company policies.
  • Motivate staff to maintain high production standards and morale.

Relationship Management

  • Collaborate with the Warehouse Planning Team to create and update production schedules.
  • Build strong networks with Quality, Blending, Engineering, Warehouse, and Planning teams to meet production demands.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Support audits related to safety and food hygiene.
  • Ensure closure of corrective action items identified during audits.





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • University Degree or Higher National Diploma in Operations or Engineering.

Experience

  • At least 3 years of experience in bottling line manufacturing, packaging, or utility operations.
  • Supervisory experience managing and developing multi-skilled teams.

Skills

Technical Knowledge:

  • Expertise in bottling equipment (e.g., blow-moulder, filler, capper, labeller, packer machines).
  • Knowledge of SAP and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with ISO standards (ISO 9001, ISO 22000, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001).
  • Understanding of World Class Manufacturing (WCM) and Lean Manufacturing principles.

Leadership Skills:

  • Strong coaching and motivational abilities.
  • Effective communication of KPIs and performance expectations.
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills:
  • Proficiency in root cause analysis methods (e.g., 5Why, fishbone diagrams).
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.

Compliance:

  • Strong knowledge of safe systems of work and regulatory standards.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, and perform manual tasks, including lifting up to 50kg.
  • Work in environments with temperature changes, dust, fumes, and moving machinery.
  • Flexible working hours, including shift work, to meet production demands.
