Job Summary: The role involves collaborating with editorial, Planning teams & production teams to gate keeping engaging visuals that complement news stories, advertising artworks and ensuring all designs are print-ready, and meeting tight publication deadlines. The Graphic Designer plays a crucial part in maintaining the newspaper’s visual identity while driving innovation and creativity in its presentation.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Create templates in Arkitex for newspaper publications, in consideration with Naviga plan layout.
- Monitor the page processing robots for continuous connectivity for a smooth pdf export to Arkitex.
- Check final pdfs for errors or inconsistencies before releasing them to CTP for platemaking.
- Work closely with Chief Sub-editors, planning officer and CTP Operators to ensure designs align with editorial content.
- Monitor and raise red flags for missed publication deadlines and generate reports detailing performance to stakeholders.
- Ensure all designs are prepared for print, following technical specifications for newspaper printing including photo quality and proper enhancement for our press dot gain.
- Stay updated on new software design tools and trends relevant to newspaper production, digital / online publishing and video editing.
- Receive commercial printing work, check it for conformity and process it in Arkitex for platemaking after confirmation with production manager for payment.
- Identify opportunities to streamline design processes and improve efficiency. Suggest creative ideas to enhance the visual appeal of the newspaper.
- Upload approved pdf pages to epaper platform in accordance with the company set guidelines
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Academic: Basic university degree in Graphics Design or any related field from a recognised institution
- Professional: Diploma in Graphics Design
- Experience: At least 3 years working experience, preferably in a printing environment of a media house.
Core Competencies
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier Pro) and CapCut.
- Strong understanding of newspaper layout design, typography, and colour theory.
- Knowledge of pre-press and newspaper printing processes.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Creativity and a passion for visual storytelling including motion (Video) for social media / Digital.
