About US Embassy:
The United States Embassy in Kampala, Uganda has enjoyed diplomatic relations with Uganda for over 30 years. Ambassador William W. Popp currently heads the U.S Mission to Uganda. The Mission is composed of several offices and organizations all working under the auspices of the Embassy and at the direction of the Ambassador.

Job Summary: Serves as the Bodyguard (BG) Shift Leader (SL) for the Protective Security Unit in the execution of protective security operations for the U.S. Ambassador/ Chief of Mission (COM), and other designated or visiting U.S. government officials as directed. Under the supervision of the Bodyguard Supervisor and managed by the Regional Security Officer (RSO) to US Embassy Kampala in order to protect him/her from harm.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Shift Lead – 30%
- Serves as the shift or team lead for Bodyguards in the protective detail security operations. Provides on-site leadership for the other Bodyguards. Makes protection operational decisions with the advice of the RSO, and mentors and guide Bodyguards on the team.
- Responsible for documenting performance concerns and security incidents.
- Administrative – Assists the Bodyguard Supervisor in planning and organizing the work of and schedules for the Bodyguards. Conducts mission planning using a variety of commercial off the shelf software and applications (e.g. Microsoft office products, Google Earth and Google Maps, etc.).
- Site Visits – Conduct comprehensive security surveys, including route analysis and venue analysis, and produces written site visit reports for the supervisor. Guides Bodyguards on the team in the production of detailed security surveys and recommends placement of security personnel and resources in order to control access and enhance safety at all venues. Security surveys include satellite imagery, still photography, and GPS plotting (surveys that identify local hospitals and government installations could serve as emergency safe-havens). Drafts reports for the Regional Security Officer regarding daily duties, equipment, expenses, and any irregularities. Travels to various locations in the host country to provide protection support.
- Oversees complex security arrangements at hotels, convention centers, restaurants, and other special event venues visited by protectee.
Close Protective Services – 60%
- Provides close protection services and BG unit mission oversight for the COM and approved Emergency Action Committee (EAC) personnel working in a varied and sometimes life-threatening environment. Serves as the principle’s primary personal protection specialist accompanying the Chief of Mission or designated protectee. Works on a daily schedule as provided by the RSO. The incumbent is authorized to use force in accordance with and subject to local laws, Post’s/Mission Use of Force policy, and Department of State guidance. BG SL provides personal protective security to the COM or designated protectee during motorcade operations, walking moves, and while in residence. Provides perimeter security by standing post at events attended by COM or EAC designated officials and conducting counter-surveillance at events attended by the protectee.
- Maintains liaison with local government law enforcement and security officials, protocol offices and local security in various jurisdictions throughout the country.
- May conduct advance security planning at all venues as well as primary, secondary and emergency route planning.
- Successfully completes and implements RSO and Diplomatic Security Training programs, to include maintaining a high level of physical fitness and passing the annual physical fitness test if required by Post.
Liaison – 10%
- Establishes and builds relationships with mid-level and senior Ugandan officials from law enforcement, protocol, and local security elements in order to facilitate effective protective security operations and maintain good relations for the U.S. Embassy protection team.
- This position may serve as a driver for the protectee (in emergencies, e.g., an incapacitated limo driver) and should have high skills of defensive driving techniques.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Education Requirements:
- Completion of high/secondary school is required. Host government Driver’s License to operate a manual transmission Sport Utility Vehicle is required (minimum Class B).
Experience:
- A minimum of three (3) years of private sector, government, police, or military experience in one or more of the following categories: bodyguard, armed escort, law enforcement officer, combat arms or infantry soldier, or other related professional security experience. And at least six (6) months in a leadership or supervisory role.
Language:
- English – Good Working Knowledge) Reading/Writing/Speaking is required.
- Luganda or Kiswahili – Good Working Knowledge Reading/Writing/Speaking is required
Job Knowledge:
- A thorough knowledge of defense measures to be used in the event of a terrorist attack, such as that learned in the military or law enforcement training.
- Knowledge in medical, fire, hostile attack, defensive and emergency driving procedures.
- Must be familiar with Ugandan police services, military, security and other government offices to ensure effective liaison and to facilitate effective protective operations including advance and motorcade operations.
Skills And Abilities:
- Ability to take initiative and show resourcefulness in accomplishing tasks.
- Ability to deal effectively with people of other cultures to obtain cooperation and reach common goals.
- Ability in leadership and interpersonal relations.
- Skill in safely operating an armored vehicle (if available).
- Ability to work on a computer.
- Ability to work variable shifts, 24 hour on-call schedule.
- Ability to travel outside capital city on an as needed basis.
- Ability to administer emergency first aid and be qualified in AES/CPR.
- Ability to be alert, exercise fast reflexes and active thinking, implement excellent observational skills, adaptation, take decisive
- actions and stay calm in dangerous situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to operate on a team.
- Skill in the use of a firearm.
- Ability to maintain physical fitness and endure frequent travel, long working hours in a stressful working environment while maintaining the above standards.
