Background

The Wrapping Nature in Culture Project – Phase II aims to integrate ecological and cultural practices through the cultivation of the Ficus natalensis (Mutuba) tree in Hoima District. To strengthen gender equality within the project’s framework, a Gender Action Learning System (GALS) methodology will be implemented. The project seeks an experienced consultant to conduct a training program for Trainers of Trainees (TOT), who will promote gender-responsive practices in the Mutuba agroforestry and bark cloth production value chain.

 

Objective

To secure the services of a qualified consultant to facilitate a GALS training program aimed at equipping a group of TOTs with skills for embedding gender responsive methods into community training efforts.

 

Scope of work

The consultant will:

  • Develop and deliver a 5-day GALS training session tailored to the specific needs of the project.
  • Provide comprehensive materials and guidance for TOTs to ensure continued application of GALS post-training.
  • Incorporate practical exercises that foster an understanding of gender roles, decision-making, and power dynamics in the household and community.
  • Offer support in planning future training that TOTs will lead within their communities.

Deliverables

  • Training program: Comprehensive 5-day GALS training for selected TOTs.
  • Training materials: Handouts, guides, and resource documents for trainees.
  • Training report: A detailed report summarizing the training conducted, challenges, observations, and recommendations for ongoing gender responsive interventions.
  • TOT mentorship plan: An outline for ongoing mentorship and support for the TOTs post training.

 




Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in facilitating GALS or related gender-focused trainings.
  • Demonstrated expertise in community engagement and participatory training approaches.
  • Experience working within Uganda, with an understanding of local cultural dynamics.
  • Proven track record of gender mainstreaming in value chain projects, preferably in the agroforestry sector.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

 

Methodology

The consultant will use a participatory training approach, combining theory with hands-on activities that encourage critical thinking and practical application. Training will be conducted in Hoima District with support from the project team for coordination and logistics.

 

Duration and Timeline

  • Training period: 5 days, with preliminary preparation and follow up.
  • Start date: Early February 2025 (Actual dates to be agreed upon with successful applicant).

 

Supervision

The consultant will report to the JGI Program Manager and liaise closely with relevant project team members and stakeholders. Regular communication will be maintained throughout.

 

Resource support

JGI will provide logistical support, including training venues and pre-reviewed training materials.

The trainer is expected to coordinate closely with JGI staff for a seamless delivery.

Evaluation Criteria: Proposals will be evaluated based on:

  • Relevant experience and qualifications.
  • Quality of the proposed training methodology and approach.
  • Cost effectiveness of the proposed budget.
  • Application submissions will be viewed on rolling basis
