The African Initiatives for Relief and Development (AIRD) is a non-political, non-religious and non-profit making NGO with Country Program Offices in Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Niger, Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. AIRD’s objective is to offer operational support, including but not limited to supply chain, logistics, construction, infrastructure, environment, livelihoods and WASH in partnership with relief and development organizations that focus on disaster-affected and development-oriented areas. AIRD delivers for and through partners including but not limited to UN Agencies, international and national donor organizations and governments

 

Job Summary:   The objective of this position is to oversee the movement, storage, and distribution of goods and persons in a an efficiently and cost-effectively. The logistics officer will ensure full compliance with SOPs and ensure their seamless flow in operations while managing teams and improving processes.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Planning and Coordination

  • Develop and oversee logistics plans to ensure products are delivered on time and in full.
  • Coordinate transportation, warehousing, and inventory management operations.
  • Plan routes and schedules to optimize delivery timelines and reduce costs.

Inventory Management

  • Monitor and maintain accurate inventory levels to meet customer demands.
  • Implement inventory control procedures to avoid overstocking or stockouts.
  • Oversee inventory audits and reporting.

Transportation Management

  • Manage transportation methods (e.g., light Vehicle, bus, truck) and ensure efficient delivery processes.
  • Support the procurement team to negotiate contracts and rates with logistics service providers.
  • Monitor fleet utilization and vehicle maintenance schedules.

Warehouse and Storage Oversight

  • Supervise the storage and handling of goods to ensure safety and efficiency.
  • Optimize warehouse space and workflow processes.
  • Implement management approved systems for tracking goods and managing warehouse operations.

Cost Management

  • Support the management in control logistics budgets and advise on cost-saving opportunities.
  • Analyze logistics expenses and implement strategies to reduce costs.

Process Improvement

  • Following guidance from the management and improve logistics systems and processes for better efficiency.
  • Use technology (e.g., route optimization tools, VTS, and ERP systems) to streamline operations.
  • Monitor KPIs and identify areas for continuous improvement.

Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure compliance with local and national regulations governing transportation and logistics.
  • Enforce safety protocols for warehouse operations, transportation, and employee safety.
  • Manage documentation for receivables, issuances and reconciliations in line with organization SOPs.

Team Management

  • Supervise logistics teams, including drivers and warehouse staff.
  • Provide training, performance reviews, and team development opportunities.
  • Ensure teams work collaboratively to meet targets and deadlines.

Supplier and Vendor Management

  • Build and maintain relationships with suppliers, carriers, and logistics service providers.
  • Monitor vendor performance to ensure quality, timeliness, and cost-efficiency.
  • Manage documentation for receivables in line with organization SOPs. e.g. GRNs, Delivery notes etc.

Customer Service

  • Collaborate with other operations teams to meet donor and partner expectations.
  • Ensure order accuracy, timely deliveries, and resolution of logistics-related donor and partner complaints.
  • Ensure teams work collaboratively to meet targets and deadlines.

Sustainability and Reporting

  • Implement environmentally friendly logistics strategies to minimize carbon footprint.
  • Generate reports and analyze data related to logistics operations, such as cost, efficiency, and delivery performance.





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in Supply Chain management, Procurement and Logistics, or any other related field
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in logistics management managing broad range of components i.e. fuel, fleet, stores etc.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a diverse team environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.
