East Africa Accountant Non-profit Jobs – FREO2 Foundation (FREO2)

Job Title:  East Africa Accountant

Organisation: FREO2 Foundation (FREO2)

Duty Station: Uganda, with preference for candidates based near Mbarara, Lira or Kampala.

Employment Basis: Full-time, 1-year contract (Flexible, hybrid working arrangements)

About Organisation:

FREO2 Foundation (FREO2) is a global non-profit committed to reducing child mortality from respiratory failure in low-resource settings. Respiratory failure claims the lives of over 1.6 million children under the age of five every year. This includes fatalities from pneumonia, birth asphyxia and preterm births. Despite the preventable nature of these deaths, children residing in low-resource settings face significant barriers to accessing life-saving treatment.

At FREO2, we offer Oxygen as a Service (O2aaS) — a reliable, affordable, and accessible solution. O2aaS comprises innovative products ensuring an uninterrupted oxygen supply, clinical training for timely diagnosis and treatment, and technical training for sustainable maintenance and support.

Partnering with remote healthcare facilities in under-resourced communities, we ensure that oxygen reaches areas where its impact is most valued — a concept we term Maximising Oxygen Miles (MOM).

Job Summary:   FREO2 is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive East Africa Accountant to oversee financial operations across Uganda and neighboring countries. You will play a vital role in ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in financial processes while supporting the successful implementation of FREO2’s UNICEF-funded O2aaS program, providing uninterrupted oxygen to 35 healthcare facilities by May 2025. This role offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with an international team, drive process improvements, and contribute to a mission that saves lives in low-resource settings.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

As the East Africa Accountant, your key focus areas will be:

  • Financial Management: Oversee program expenses, invoicing, reconciliations, payroll, and cash floats using Xero.
  • Planning and Budgeting: Collaborate with the Global Finance Manager to prepare budgets, monitor expenditures, and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Compliance and Reporting: Ensure adherence to accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and timely submission of reports to tax authorities and auditors.
  • Stakeholder Support: Communicate effectively with in-country teams, donors, and partners to manage receivables and provide financial guidance for program implementation.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive efficiency and innovation in financial systems, suggesting improvements to processes and supporting FREO2’s strategic goals.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • 3+ years of professional experience, ideally with NGOs or donor-funded programs.
  • Proficiency in Xero and strong expertise in financial operations, including payroll, procurement, and reconciliations.
  • Familiarity with financial statements preparation and compliance with tax regulations in East Africa.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a remote, international team.
  • Bonus: Experience with donor-funded projects and knowledge of East African taxation regulations.

Benefits

  • Contribute to a life-saving mission improving healthcare access in low-resource settings.
  • Collaborate with a supportive, global team passionate about making a difference.
  • Gain hands-on experience managing large-scale programs with international stakeholders.
  • Enjoy a flexible, remote work arrangement with access to FREO2 hubs in Mbarara or Lira.
  • Opportunities for professional growth in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.
