Lancet Laboratories Uganda limited is the leading provider of private diagnostic pathology services in Uganda. Incorporated and registered in Uganda since April 2009, it forms part of the Lancet Laboratories East Africa Group based in Nairobi, Kenya.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Strategic Management Objectives
- Provides overall direction and management of technical and laboratory administrative and support functions to fulfil organizational objectives, achieving specific goals, and maximizing profit and efficiency.
- Provide day-to-day direction and management of Technical and QA functions to fulfil organizational objectives.
- Participates in meetings with respective technical teams to report on operational matters, discuss progress against agreed plans.
Technical Duties
- Project management and establishment of new laboratories in accordance with agreed processes and in line with strategic objectives.
- Develops, manages, communicates, and ensures implementation of working instructions, standard operating procedures, and operational standards with regard to all technical and /or administrative processes and practices in support of the achievement of organisational strategy and objectives.
- Manages and directs laboratory accreditation processes, including preparation for audits, maintenance of current status, document updates and scope of approved tests, to ensure that accreditation is achieved or obtained in line with organisational objectives.
- Monitors equipment maintenance including enforcing compliance to service level agreements with service providers, asset management, procurement of goods and staff overtime expenditure to ensure the most effective utilization of resources, optimization of stock levels and reduction of costs at all times.
- Monitors the maintenance and calibration of the equipment used in the laboratory to ensure that it’s operating efficiently and provide accurate results. This Includes ensuring that instrument maintenance and quality control results are recorded as well as troubleshooting.
- Manages client liaison to maintain a positive image of the organization, promote the services of Lancet laboratories and monitor the resolution of customer complaints.
- Participates in regular meetings with pathologists and other regional technical managers to report on operational matters, discuss progress against agreed plans and update/ develop technical standards, procedures and work instructions.
- Provides input into evaluation and validations of new equipment and methods to ensure standardization and continuous technological advancement.
- Performs statistical analysis of management reports in order to monitor work and performance status as well as determine expenditure trends of the region and provide inputs into strategic planning of the organization.
- Identify relevant training needs and assists in teaching and training of laboratory personnel, interns and students, medical colleagues, and associated health workers to ensure that they are competent in various laboratory techniques, processes and systems.
- Adheres to professional conduct requirements in line with organisational policy and relevant professional body ethical standards and monitors compliance of own employees in this regard.
- Performs the role of a medical technologist as required in accordance with operational needs.
QA/QC Duties
- Determines and/or monitors the implementation of service levels and quality standards, ISO 9000, 15189 and lean processes in accordance with the principles of Good Laboratory Practice, SANAS/KENAS accreditation requirements, Quality assurance including quality control, health and safety, standard operating procedures, turn-around time targets and service level agreements with clients, to ensure that the laboratory is constantly able to deliver a high quality, cost effective and safe service.
- Co-ordinate and conduct internal assessment, ensuring all labs undergo accreditation to ensure accurate and competent test results.
- Ensuring that all support departments undergo certification to ISO 9001 standards to strive for customer satisfaction.
- Ensuring compliance with national & international standards and legislation ISO 17025, 15189, 9001, SANAS/KENAS, AHPC/UN&MA legislation.
- Produce QA Documents when required thereby contributing to Quality management systems for Lancet laboratories Uganda Ltd, setting up and maintaining control of documentation to ensure systematic and easy retrieval of records.
General Management
- Manages staff including recruitment, development, mentoring, disciplining when necessary and performance manages laboratory managers to ensure that service standards are met in pursuance of team and Lancet’s strategic objectives.
- Directs on-site training, seminars, and participation in continuing professional development (CPD) activities to ensure that laboratory staff continuously update their knowledge and skills as well as comply with professional registration requirements.
- Ensuring department expenses stay within the budget by reducing resource wastage through application of relevant QMS policies, process and procedures.
- Support the Laboratory Managers in undertake planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating the work of the technical lab personnel.
- Supports Lab managers and Head technologist supervise the work of subordinate staff engaged in professional, technical discipline support activities; monitor work performance; delegate work effectively.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The post holder should hold a Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology.
- Should be registered as a Medical Technologist (in the relevant discipline where he/ she is practicing with the Allied Health Professions Council of Uganda).
- Should preferably have at least 8 to 10 years working experience, including 3 to 4 years Managerial experience, in a relevant pathology laboratory environment.
- Certification in good clinical laboratory practice (CLP), basic health and safety as well as management training are desirable additional training requirements.
