Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.

 

Job Summary:   Provides microbiology sample processing and data entry support and mentoring capacity. Works in the Data Entry and Processing areas to ensure that the microbiology samples received and processed have the accompanying Lab requisitions entered in a timely manner. Performs bacteriology, mycobacteriology as well as manual and automated culture and sensitivity tests. Demonstrates skill and knowledge on all laboratory test systems in a clinical microbiology unit. Follows Good Laboratory Practices and quality requirements of the Core Lab

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Technical

  • Performs routine benchwork in the Microbiology unit according to current protocols, procedures and quality assurance requirements.
  • Performs freezer sample storage and retrieval according to current protocols.
  • Performs reagent preparation and equipment maintenance according to training and assignment.
  • Performs bacteriology, mycobacteriology as well as manual and automated culture and sensitivity tests according to current protocols, procedures and quality assurance requirements.
  • Ensuring compliance to GCLP and all regulatory requirements
  • Demonstrates skill and knowledge on all laboratory testing systems in a clinical Microbiology unit.
  • Maintains a high level of precision and accuracy for all work performed.
  • Supports QI program by regular worksheet reviews, SOP reviews, performing daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual maintenance of laboratory equipment as required in a timely manner and provide input as required for updating laboratory procedures and procedure manual.
  • Responds to technical and logistical problems encountered in the laboratory in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Ensure proper stock management to minimize stock outs and expiries in the Microbiology unit.
  • Ensures that waste disposed of is made safe prior to incineration.
  • Provide monthly reports on the performance of the microbiology unit on all active studies, achievements, challenges and improvement plans
  • Provides input as required for updating laboratory procedures and procedure manuals.
  • Prepares lab samples for shipment as needed.
  • Meets or exceeds continuing education requirements for position.

Support

  • Assist with implementation of new study protocols, new instrumentation, new methodology and training as needed.
  • Assists with training and problems solving as needed.

Data Entry

  • Performs data entry of requisitions, results and storage requirements using Oracle LIS and LDMS.
  • Files laboratory source documents.
  • Provides electronic transfer of data as needed.

Safety

  • Follows all laboratory procedures including safety guidelines, the use of personal protective equipment and awareness of blood-borne pathogens.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment.





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

Academic Qualifications:

  • A degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or Medical Laboratory Sciences

Person Specification:

  • Excellent knowledge in micro-organism culture, isolation, detection, reporting and use of microbial sensitivity methods.
  • Experience in developing and implementing technical SOPs relevant to the clinical microbiology work.
  • Demonstrates a cooperative attitude in relationships with co-workers and other personnel.
  • Meets or exceeds quality assurance levels of the laboratory and collaboration.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patients, patient results and project operations.
  • Serves as an effective representative to physicians, nurses, counsellors and visitors in a courteous and empathic manner.
  • Follows laboratory and collaboration polices.
  • Uses all facilities and supplies with care and in a cost-effective manner.
  • Assist or carry out other duties as assigned by your direct supervisor or laboratory management
