Job Summary: We are seeking a full-time Web Developer and Designer – WordPress Theme Developer to join our team in Kampala. This is not your typical WordPress job of setting up pre-built templates. We are looking for someone with a strong ability to translate UI/UX designs (from tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, etc.) into fully functional, custom WordPress themes. The ideal candidate is someone who can think beyond installing third-party themes and create bespoke WordPress experiences that are both visually stunning and technically robust.
This role requires a deep understanding of both back-end and front-end development, proficiency in modern web development technologies, and a passion for clean, maintainable code.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- WordPress Theme Development: Build custom WordPress themes from scratch based on provided UI/UX designs (e.g., Figma, Adobe XD, etc.), ensuring a pixel-perfect match and responsive design.
- Front-End & Back-End Development: Develop and maintain the front-end user interface while managing the back-end development to ensure optimal functionality, performance, and scalability.
- Custom Plugin Development: Write custom plugins or modify existing plugins to meet specific client needs, ensuring high performance and clean coding practices.
- UI/UX Implementation: Collaborate closely with the design team to ensure that all features meet aesthetic and usability standards, as well as technical best practices.
- Performance Optimization: Optimize websites for speed, scalability, and SEO best practices.
- Cross-Browser & Responsive Design Testing: Ensure that the website performs seamlessly across all browsers and devices.
- Collaboration & Project Management: Work closely with project managers, designers, and other developers to deliver high-quality projects on time.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Proven Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in WordPress theme development and front-end web design, with a portfolio demonstrating custom theme development (not just modifications of pre-built themes).
- UI/UX to Code: Ability to convert UI/UX designs into fully functional, pixel-perfect WordPress websites.
- Proficient in Front-End Development: HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript (including popular libraries like jQuery), Bootstrap, and other front-end frameworks.
- Back-End Development Expertise: Strong knowledge of PHP (including OOP), MySQL, and WordPress core functions. Experience with Laravel or other PHP frameworks is a plus.
- Custom Plugin Development: Experience creating custom plugins and working with WordPress hooks, filters, and APIs.
- Familiarity with Modern Development Tools: Experience using Git for version control, task runners like Gulp or Grunt, and building processes (Webpack, npm, etc.).
- SEO & Performance Focus: Strong understanding of SEO best practices, website optimization techniques, and page load performance.
- Responsive & Cross-Browser Testing: Proven experience ensuring website compatibility across different browsers and devices.
- Problem-Solving Mindset: Strong analytical skills with an ability to troubleshoot and solve complex technical challenges.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with WooCommerce or other e-commerce platforms.
- Knowledge of JavaScript frameworks (React, Vue.js, etc.).
- Familiarity with RESTful APIs and third-party API integrations.
- Degree in Computer Science, Web Development, or related field.
- Case Studies or Portfolio showcasing custom WordPress development projects, including details on challenges faced and how they were overcome.
