Southgate Industries is a leading fruit processing company, located in Kampala Industrial & Business Park (KIBP Namanve). We process pineapples, mangoes, and bananas into puree, concentrate, and other value-added products.
Job Summary: The Plant Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations of SGI’s production facility, ensuring the efficient processing and/or production of consistently high-quality products at the right cost. The company’s products include but are not limited to; mango and pineapple fruit pulp, pineapple juice concentrates, and bottled juice products. The role will focus on production planning, quality control and assurance, and continuous improvement in processes and technology while adhering to safety and environmental standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
The Plant Manager will be responsible for the following functions
- Production Management
- Maintenance and Equipment Management
- Quality Control and assurance
- Health and Safety Compliance
Duty/Responsibility
- Oversee the entire production processes, ensuring timely output of (all products to meet demand requirements) juice concentrate and bottled juice.
- Actively liaise with the demand side of the business to ensure an accurate production planning process
- Monitor production efficiency and implement measures to improve productivity and reduce waste.
- Ensure production targets are met while maintaining quality, cost and safety standards.
- Oversee the maintenance of all machinery, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal performance.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules to avoid equipment breakdowns.
- Coordinate with the Health & Safety Manager to ensure safe operation of machinery.
- Work with the Quality Assurance team to ensure all products meet the required quality and safety standards.
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product quality.
- Ensure that all production activities comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Collaborate with the Health & Safety Manager to conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments.
- Lead, train, and supervise the production staff, including machine operators and maintenance personnel.
- Set performance targets and monitor staff performance to ensure high productivity and motivation.
- Provide coaching and development opportunities for the production team.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Experience – At least 5 – 7 years of experience in manufacturing, with a focus on food and beverage processing, particularly fruit juice production.
- Knowledge of food safety and quality standards – Familiarity with standards like HACCP, ISO 22000, FSSC and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) is critical for maintaining product quality and safety.
- Lean Manufacturing and Process Improvement Certifications – Certifications in Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or similar methodologies are highly valued for process optimization and waste reduction
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Food Science, or a related field – Degrees in Mechanical, Industrial, or Production Engineering, or Food Technology are preferred
- Master’s degree in business administration (MBA) or a related field
- Operations Management – Strong expertise in managing day-to-day operations, optimizing production schedules, and ensuring efficient use of resources and equipment.
