Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.

 

Job Summary:   Since 2019, IDI with funding from CDC has been implementing a project on Strengthening Partnerships for Preparedness and Response in Uganda. The project has supported and created an impact in building and strengthening public health systems and health security across the country.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Epidemiologist will play a critical role in shaping scientific questions, refining analysis methods, and identifying relevant literature and data sources for the project. Working closely with a senior statistician, the Epidemiologist will be responsible for conducting literature searches, scoping reviews, and synthesizing findings into high-level scientific reports. The primary objective of this role is to produce a robust evidence base, including modeling studies that inform advocacy, health programming, and planning efforts.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to define research questions, study objectives, and analysis methodologies for African disease burden assessment.
  • Undertake literature searches and scoping reviews to identify relevant studies, datasets, and evidence sources related to disease epidemiology and burden in African countries.
  • Support the senior epidemiologist in refining data analysis methods, interpreting statistical findings, and integrating epidemiological insights into scientific reports.
  • Conduct comprehensive data synthesis and interpretation, including meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and meta-regression analyses where appropriate.
  • Contribute to developing scientific reports, manuscripts, and presentations summarizing key findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals and dissemination to high-level scientific audiences.
  • Project coordination: Coordinate all project activities and tasks, ensuring efficient execution and adherence to established timelines. Ensure timely submission of work plans, activity requests, budgets, and reports following the IDI Finance and Administration guidelines. Monitor project expenses and ensure adherence to the approved budget.
  • Design and implement a robust M&E framework to track project performance and outcomes. Monitor project indicators and evaluate progress toward achieving project objectives. Conduct periodic assessments to identify bottlenecks and areas for improvement.
  • Epidemic Intelligence and early outbreak detection: Coordinate activities aligned to the epidemic intelligence frameworks through needs-based support to the regional emergency operations centers and supported districts to enhance and effectively detect, verify, analyze, and investigate diseases of public health importance.
  • Reporting and documentation: Ensure all activity and technical reports/presentations are prepared and submitted/presented in a timely/professional manner to funders/stakeholders.
  • Coordinate documentation of project success stories, abstracts, and manuscripts.
  • Support miscellaneous activities aligned to the project/department/Institution’s objectives and strategy.




Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • A primary degree in a health-related field
  • A master’s degree or advanced training in Epidemiology, Public health or equivalent
