About Organisation:

The Darfur Network for Human Rights (DNHR) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO) that works to promote and protect human rights and fundamental liberties in Darfur and other areas of Sudan. We do this by monitoring and documenting human rights violations, providing legal assistance to victims, and advocating for change with the Sudanese government and international community.

 

Job Summary:   We are seeking a dedicated Communications Officer to join our team. This position will play a critical role in managing DNHR’s internal and external day-to-day communications, documenting and reporting on human rights violations, and supporting the organization’s advocacy efforts.

 

The Communications Officer at the Darfur Network for Human Rights (DNHR) will be responsible for developing and executing communication strategies to raise awareness of human rights violations in Darfur and Sudan. The role involves working closely with the MDR department in documenting and reporting on human rights violations, managing digital platforms, and creating advocacy campaigns. The officer will also engage with media outlets, coordinate with partner organizations, and support internal communications, ensuring accurate and timely information sharing to enhance the organization’s advocacy efforts. Fluency in English along with experience in human rights or communications, is essential.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Communication Strategy Development:

  • Develop and implement an overall communications strategy to raise awareness of human rights issues in Darfur and Sudan.
  • Manage and update DNHR’s communication platforms, including website content, social media, newsletters, and reports.
  • Ensure messaging aligns with DNHR’s mission and advocacy goals.

Documentation and Reporting of Human Rights Violations:

  • Posting field updates daily on the human rights situation
  • Work closely with the monitoring team to document human rights violations, including conducting interviews, collecting field data, and compiling evidence.
  • Draft, edit, and distribute comprehensive reports, press releases, and other documentation on human rights violations in Darfur and Sudan.
  • Collaborate with field teams to ensure accurate and timely documentation of violations, using clear and concise language.
  • Weekly press releases on the overall situation in Sudan

Advocacy and Public Relations:

  • Develop content for advocacy campaigns to raise international awareness about human rights violations in Sudan, targeting key stakeholders including policymakers, international organizations, and the general public.
  • Act as a spokesperson for DNHR when required, engaging with media outlets, responding to press inquiries, and arranging interviews.
  • Support the organization’s human rights advocacy efforts by preparing briefing materials, policy papers, and presentations for key stakeholders.

Social Media and Digital Engagement:

  • Manage DNHR’s social media presence, including creating content that highlights the organization’s work and engages the international community.
  • Develop digital campaigns and ensure effective communication across platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.) to build visibility for human rights issues in Darfur.
  • Track and analyze digital metrics to enhance engagement and reach.

Internal Communications:

  • Maintain regular communication with field teams, human rights defenders, and partner organizations to stay informed about ongoing human rights developments.
  • Ensure that critical information from field monitoring efforts is accurately communicated to relevant departments within DNHR for reporting and advocacy purposes.

Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration:

  • Coordinate with other human rights organizations, international bodies, and the media to amplify DNHR’s advocacy efforts.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key partners to promote collaboration on joint campaigns or initiatives.
  • Organize and participate in conferences, workshops, and meetings on human rights advocacy.





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Human Rights, Political Science, International Relations, or a related field. A Master’s degree is an advantage.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in communications, preferably in the human rights or non-profit sector.
  • Strong knowledge of human rights issues in Darfur and Sudan, with experience in monitoring, documentation, and reporting on rights violations.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with experience producing reports, press releases, and social media content.
  • Proficiency in digital tools, social media platforms, and content management systems.
  • Ability to work in a high-pressure environment and handle sensitive information discreetly.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a diverse team in remote and challenging conditions.
  • Fluency in English and Arabic (spoken and written) is an added advantage.

Preferred Skills:

  • Communications, media and journalism
  • Familiarity with human rights monitoring methodologies and international human rights law.
  • Experience with media relations and crisis communications.
  • Ability to develop and implement digital advocacy campaigns.
  • Experience working with grassroots organizations or in conflict settings is highly desirable.
