Global Health Uganda (GHU) is a registered not for profit, limited liability company with the mission to promote child health by conducting and facilitating quality and relevant research in child health, neurodevelopment and interventions.

 

Job Summary:   GHU is inviting applications from suitably qualified individuals for the position of Accountant, based in Kampala. The main purpose of this position is to provide technical support to the finance function by preparing accurate statements, managing budgets and taxes, maintaining internal control systems, upporting audit work and ensuring compliance with legal regulations.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare year-end financial statements and income tax filing.
  • Compile and present reports, budgets, business plans, commentaries and financial statements.
  • Prepare/review and approve expenditure claims for individual research projects.
  • Ensure that expenditures incurred on projects are eligible and supported by appropriate documentation.
  • Handle staff requests and core expense claims as required and review payments to ensure there is proper documentation.
  • Gather and present information required for both internal and external audits and deal with queries both during and after the audits
  • Review monthly and annual financial reports.
  • Payroll preparation and processing.
  • Prepare all statutory returns (e.g. NSSF, PAYE, WHT, LST) as required by the respective government authorities.
  • Prepare monthly reports for GHU, the different projects and monthly bank reconciliation statements.
  • Record Capital Asset additions and disposals in the Asset register and perform periodic physical counts of Capital Assets.
  • Responsible for all GHU bank transactions including withdraws, deposits and transfers. (Bank deposits, receiving Cash/Deposits).
  • Provide financial guidance and support to other departments and colleagues so they can make sound business decisions.
  • Responsible for proper storage and archiving of all accounting records.
  • Prepare periodic donor financial reports as per agreed reporting schedules and formats; and discuss budget performance comments with the project managers before submission to the donors.
  • Maintain proper records of each assigned project as per internal and donor record retention policies and guidelines to facilitate future reviews by auditors, donors and also for smooth staff transition
  • Carry out any other duties as assigned by your supervisors in line with your work.




Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a chartered University in either Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field.
  • Full professional qualification e.g CPA. ACCA
  • A minimum of three (03) years of progressive professional experience in finance and accounting.
  • Extensive experience in preparing and managing significant budgets with diverse streams of income and expenditure
  • Extensive Computer knowledge in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and proficiency in working with computerized accounting systems preferably Navision
  • Result orientation: The ability to take direct action in order to attain or exceed objectives.
  • Experience of donor compliance, taxation and organisational risk management.
  • High integrity and openness with commitment to good governance and willingness to travel to GHU study sites.
  • Attention to detail: The ability to effectively and consistently process detailed information.
  • Experience with donor funded projects is an added advantage
