Job Summary: The Project Assistant – Agriculture and Environment will be responsible for field implementation of agriculture and environment activities, mainly focusing upon farmer group capacity development in the settlement and hosting communities. The job holder will build capacity of farmer groups through trainings, demonstration and field follow up. The job holder will implement all field activities including participant selection, farmer group formation, technical trainings in climate smart agriculture, marketing, climate change and natural resource management, business and income generating skills. The incumbent will ensure regular home visits to monitor activities and conduct timely reporting. The incumbent will work closely with leadership structures of refugees and host communities (Agriculture Officers, Forest Officers, Community Development Officers, LC and RWC) in regard to climate change and livelihoods. The Job holder will ensure activities are approved, implemented, monitored and reported according to agreed project plans. S/He will report according to agreed work plans in line with the donor and World Vision Uganda (WVU) policies. The job holder will work under the direct supervision of the Project Officer, and supervise Community Based Facilitators.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Effective Project Implementation and sustainability
- Develop annual project activity plans and update quarterly in collaboration with key departments, oversee implementation to high standards by scope and timelines
- Ensure participatory and transparent selection of participants.
- Provide technical assistance on climate smart agriculture, sustainable environment management of natural resources, climate smart agriculture, and anticipatory messaging.
- Promote modern farming practices through training, advising farmers, extension services, farm visits and demonstrations.
- Support establishment and maintenance of demonstration plots as learning and multiplication sites for farmer groups.
- Build farmer’s capacity to improve production and productivity of selected enterprises
- Promote appropriate innovations and approaches on energy utilization, including green fuels, renewable energy, lighting, powering technologies and green livelihoods.
- Promote restoration of degraded, fragile ecosystems through FMNR, sustainable land scape restoration practices at household, community and Institutional levels.
- Provide technical assistance to participants on selection of high value tree varieties and resilient livelihoods.
- Provide business training and support on income generating activities, market analysis and value chain analysis.
- Organize monthly field planning meetings with farmer groups and WVU departments to guide effective implementation.
- Ensure core project models and approaches are implemented according to schedule and minimum standards.
- Better living conditions for the affected persons as they will be able to meet most of their basic needs.
- Awareness created among stakeholders on WV interventions in the area.
- Improved farmers’ knowledge on sustainable natural resources management for enhanced production and productivity.
- Participate and contribute in environment coordination meetings to support the project
Community engagement and advocacy
- Conduct awareness on IGA activities among communities and local leaders.
- Link farmer groups to government and partners to access additional social services
- Facilitate awareness campaigns on climate change impacts and the adaptation and mitigation measures
- Promote community adoption and production of improved energy saving cooking stove
- Facilitate and link beneficiaries to economic development and income generating activities.
- Make sure there is balanced gender representation amongst beneficiaries and leaders.
- Assist in solving any conflicts within group members.
- Organize monthly field planning meetings with farmer groups and WVU departments to guide effective implementation.
- Improved relationship with consortium partners, OPM livelihood focal persons and local government line departments.
- Strong cohesion among farmer groups and institutions.
- Improved farmers’ knowledge on good agronomic practices for enhanced production and productivity.
Linkage, networking, collaboration and mentorship
- Maintain good coordination and working relationships with OPM, UNHCR, Humanitarian Actors, and district leaders.
- Collaborate with district and development actors on ongoing government programs on livelihoods and environment enhancement, liaising with extension workers, other relevant sub-county leaders and district stakeholders to facilitate sustainable implementation of project activities.
- Participate in stakeholder joint engagements, planning meetings, livelihood and environment sector working groups, monthly coordination meetings, workshops and other fora.
- Build capacity of farmer groups on climate smart agriculture, sound environment management practices, livelihoods, markets to improve production for the community.
- Foster ongoing positive cooperation with stakeholders and embrace links between market actors and participants.
- Cordial relationships with key external sources of technical expertise for capacity building.
- Awareness created among stakeholders on WV interventions in the area.
- World Vision has strong bilateral relationships with key partners, donor and government counterparts.
- Opportunities for collaboration with external stakeholders and for securing resources are identified and taken.
Documentation, Reporting and Knowledge Management
- Compile and submit activity reports and support preparation of quality monthly, quarterly and annual progress reports
- Conduct regular follow up visits to farmer groups, and their IGAs, and to members to see if they are applying practices, and provide technical advice and mentoring.
- Track progress of the farmer groups and keep records.
- Carry out quarterly meetings with farmer groups to assess performance at the community and project level.
- Facilitate data collection from farmer groups, and manage the information flow in the M&E (LEAP) database
- Support preparation of farmer groups own monitoring plans.
- Ensure activities are effectively implemented, monitored and progress reports shared.
- Compile monthly and quarterly reports, inclusive of success stories and lessons learnt.
- Activity reports submitted on timely basis.
- Support documentation of quality reports submitted timely on monthly, quarterly, Biannually or annual basis.
- Technical coaching plan developed and applied for all project participants
- Project achievements, successes and lesson learned shared
Child Protection, gender and Disability inclusion
- Ensure inclusion and participation of vulnerable groups in project activities
- Liaise with WV experts to provide proficient advice on gender, protection and disability inclusion in the project.
- Monitor wellbeing and child abuse cases and report any incidents in line with child protection policy and guidelines.
- Work with local leaders to protect children from child violations and abuses
- Sensitize parents including most vulnerable children and other stakeholders about children’s rights and responsibilities.
- Any other business as assigned by supervisor including participation in key committees and task forces
- Child protection integrated into livelihoods interventions to ensure child safety and reduce/ eliminate child abuse and exploitation among all stakeholders.
