Our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, situated in Matugga, Wakiso district, Uganda, shall produce high-quality medicines across a wide range of therapeutic areas.
Job Summary: The EHS Officer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring safety and environmental programs, ensuring compliance with local and federal regulations, and promoting a culture of safety within the organization. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of EHS regulations in the pharmaceutical or manufacturing industry, as well as the ability to conduct risk assessments and develop preventive safety measures
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Monitor factory operations to ensure compliance with local, national, and industry-specific health and safety regulations.
- Perform regular inspections of the facility, equipment, and processes to identify potential hazards or unsafe practices.
- Implement safety protocols and promote a safety culture among employees, ensuring adherence to personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines.
- Record and report any workplace accidents or incidents and assist in investigating the root cause to prevent recurrence.
- Assist in performing risk assessments for various activities, machinery, and processes within the BioPharma factory.
- Support the development and implementation of emergency response plans, and conduct drills to ensure preparedness.
- Ensure that the factory adheres to environmental regulations related to waste disposal, emissions, and chemical handling.
- Organize training sessions for employees on safety procedures, emergency protocols, and safe use of equipment.
- Keep accurate records of safety inspections, incident reports, risk assessments, and training activities.
- Work closely with other departments to address safety concerns and ensure a safe working environment for all employees.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Chemical Engineering, or a related field from a recognized institution.
- Additional certifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH, or OSHA is highly desirable.
- Postgraduate Diploma in a related field (Environmental Management, Safety Management, etc.) is an advantage.
Experience:
- 3 years of experience in an EHS role within a manufacturing, BioPharma, or pharmaceutical environment.
- Experience in ensuring regulatory compliance with Ugandan laws and international safety standards is an asset.
- Job knowledge: Strong understanding of Ugandan environmental and safety regulations, such as the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and guidelines from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). Familiarity with international standards like ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety).
- Language: English level IV (Advanced knowledge) Reading/Writing/Speaking is required.
