About Organisation:

The Ministry of Health under the Department of National Health Laboratory & Diagnostic Services (NHLDS) has received funding from Global Fund Grant (Microbiology/Amr Program) to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and wishes to use part of the grant to build strong and resilient laboratory systems that provides reference testing including genomic surveillance for pathogens of public health threat. The Ministry of Health therefore invites suitable qualified candidates to fill the positions existing in the Department of National Health Laboratory & Diagnostic Services (NHLDS) under the Global Fund Program.

 

Job Summary:   Supporting microbiology testing services across the national healthcare system. The position involves leadership on Anti-microbial (AMR), surveillance activities, diagnostic stewardship, policy development, and strategic planning to optimize microbiology services and ensure high-quality, standardized testing.




Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Guide the provision of services for the national Microbiology Health laboratory network.

Participate in strategic planning initiatives, aligning microbiology services with public health goals and priorities.

To improve access to quality-assured laboratory testing for priority bacterial/fungal infections and antimicrobial drug susceptibility testing at all levels of the health system.

Support AMR diagnostic stewardship and integration of antimicrobial drug susceptibility testing in existing national tiered laboratory networks.

Provide sustainable technical expertise, mentorship and training models to strengthen capacity in microbiology laboratory and diagnostics for national and sub-national teams, applying national guides for AMR control and diagnostics.

Collaborate with regional microbiologists and laboratory managers to ensure a coordinated and standardized approach to microbiology testing

To support key technical areas for laboratory strengthening including external quality assessment (EQA), tools/manual development, laboratory biosafety, and laboratory ISO 15189 accreditation /certification process.

To support implementation and use of and access to appropriate and quality assured diagnostic testing in all regions and on best practices and gaps in implementing standards in microbiology laboratory and diagnostics; and to disseminate information through policy briefs and reports. Explore innovative ways to control AMR by enhancing collaboration between medical staff and microbiology laboratories, improving the clinician-laboratory interface.

To develop educational tools for laboratory technicians/clinicians and decision-aid tools to optimize diagnostic stewardship and rational use of antibiotics.

Provide technical assistance in developing monitoring strategies for laboratory performance, focusing on sample management, turnaround times, and communication of critical results to clinicians.

Participate in developing policies, technical guidelines, standards, and national protocols for general laboratory services and Antimicrobial resistance control.

Provide mentorship and support supervision in surveillance and disease outbreak investigations, especially for drug-resistant organisms.

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and surgery (MBChB), BDS, or its equivalent

Master’s degree in Microbiology (M. Med Microbiology) or its equivalent from a recognized institution.

Relevant professional registration and licensing.

At least 3 years’ professional experience working with a reputable Organization.
