About Organisation:
Co-recipient of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize, Humanity & Inclusion (the new name of Handicap International) is a 40-year-old independent and impartial organization working in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster.
We work alongside people with disabilities and individuals experiencing extreme hardship, acting and bearing witness to respond to their essential needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights.
HI in Uganda is currently implementing development and humanitarian interventions in six sectors/thematic areas: Livelihood, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Physical and Functional Rehabilitation, Inclusive Education, Inclusive Health, and Inclusive Humanitarian Action (IHA) to improve access and quality of services to the most vulnerable people including persons with disabilities promoting a more inclusive and harmonious society.
Project Background
INSPIRE (Inclusive Norms, Support, and Promoting Inclusive Reproductive Empowerment) project is aimed at sustainably enhancing access to reproductive health rights and services for persons with disabilities in the Nakivale refugee settlement, one of the largest refugee settlements in the world.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides guidance and technical support to stakeholders and project partners in accordance with the overall technical frameworks and standards concerning inclusive SRHR
- Understand Technical Frameworks and Standards: Review and become thoroughly familiar with the overall technical frameworks and standards concerning inclusive SRHR. Attend relevant training and workshops to deepen understanding of these frameworks and standards.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Identify and map stakeholders and project partners involved in SRHR, GBV, Protection and Women Empowerment. Build relationships and maintain regular communication with stakeholders and partners. Determine their specific needs
- Technical Assistance: Liaise with the HI’s SRHR Technical Specialist to provide technical support and mentorship to stakeholders and project partners.
- Training and Capacity Building: Liaise with the HI’s SRHR Technical Specialist to organize and deliver training sessions and workshops for stakeholders and partners on Disability Inclusion, inclusive SRHR, Social Behaviour Changes, Gender Based Violence, advocacy and any others topics identified as a training needs during project implementation.
- Monitoring and Follow-up: Regularly monitor the implementation of guidance and support provided to stakeholders and partners on disability inclusion, ISRHR, Social Behaviours changes and any other topics identified as priority. Conduct follow-up assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of the guidance and support.
- Feedback and Improvement: Collect feedback from stakeholders and partners on the guidance and support provided. Analyse feedback to identify areas for improvement and refine the guidance materials and support strategies.
- Documentation and Reporting: Document all guidance and support activities, including key interactions, challenges, and outcomes. Prepare regular reports summarizing the guidance provided and its impact on stakeholders and partners.
- Knowledge Sharing and Collaboration: Facilitate knowledge-sharing sessions and platforms for stakeholders and partners to exchange best practices and lessons learned. Encourage collaboration among stakeholders and partners to strengthen the overall INCLUDE initiative.
- Advocacy and Awareness: Advocate for the adoption of disability inclusion inclusive SRHR frameworks and standards among stakeholders and partners. Raise awareness about the importance of inclusive SRHR through presentations, publications, media and community events. Support the local OPDs within their advocacy roles.
- Responsibility 2: Ensure a systematic approach to capturing, documenting, and sharing technical learnings from the project, fostering continuous improvement and broader impact in Disability inclusion, Social Behaviors changes and inclusive SRHR.
- Documentation of Best Practices: Document successful strategies and approaches used in the project. Compile case studies, success stories, and lessons learned.
- Internal Knowledge Sharing: Organize internal workshops and seminars to share technical learning with project staff and partners. Facilitate discussions and knowledge exchange sessions to deepen understanding and application of learnings.
- External Knowledge Dissemination: Develop a dissemination plan to share technical learnings with external stakeholders, including NGOs, government agencies, and community organizations. Use various channels (e.g., conferences, webinars, publications) to reach a wide audience.
- Capacity Building: Integrate technical learnings into training and capacity-building programs for stakeholders and partners. Develop and deliver training sessions focused on applying project learnings to improve disability inclusion and inclusive SRHR practices.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Engage stakeholders in reviewing and validating the technical learnings from the project. Facilitate focus group discussions and feedback sessions to gather stakeholder insights and perspectives.
- Advocacy and Awareness: Use technical learnings to inform advocacy campaigns promoting inclusive SRHR.
Contributes to ensuring HI’s technical influence on inclusive SRHR and disability inclusion
- Contributes to the influence of HI’s expertise: can represent HI’s technical expertise in relevant local networks and with local partners at the community and district level, as delegated by PM or the SRHR Technical Specialist. Submit report/feedback.
- Identify and develop partnerships with community structures, local NGOs, institutions, and relevant actors
Ensure planning and field coordination of project activities with internal team and external stakeholders
- Participate in the project inception; daily, weekly, and monthly planning meeting; technical meetings, case reviews, and regular project reviews (ISPR, BSS, Lessons Learned, etc.)
- Coordinate activities with the PM, SRHR technical specialist, and project team (Social Workers/Inclusion Officers and CBFs), ensuring coordinated activity implementation within the project’s scope and HI procedures and standards.
- Contribute to quality reporting of activities especially the learnings from all the Include trainings.
- Draft quality “human interest” stories and other testimonies and submit them to PM and the SRHR technical specialist for approval and submission to Hinside, and the social media platform.
- Participate in capacity building and mandatory HI training allocated to staff in-country.
Respect for HI identity, rules and policies;
- Know, understand, apply and respect the HI code of conduct and ethics, HI mandate and values, HI rules and operating procedure, HI policies (child protection policy, policy and mechanism for the prevention of and fight against bribery, the protection of beneficiaries from sexual exploitation and abuse policy) and make sure they are known, understood, applied and respected by its team.
- Know, understand, apply and respect HI security rules and ensure they are known, understood and applied by her/his team.
Emergency preparedness and response
- Contributes to the program’s emergency preparedness actions and, during an emergency, adapts his/her work modality to contribute to HI’s effective humanitarian response.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Mandatory
- A post graduate diploma in a relevant field
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Social Sciences, Education, Development Studies, or a related field.
- Ability to adapt training methods and materials to meet the needs of different audiences and contexts.
- Flexibility to adjust training plans based on participant feedback and situational demands
- At least 3-5 years of experience in training, facilitation, or adult education, preferably in a relevant sector such as health, Social Behaviour change, education, or community development.
- Experience in designing, delivering, and evaluating training programs for diverse audiences.
Desirable:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong presentation skills with the ability to convey complex information clearly and effectively. Ability to facilitate group discussions, encourage participation, and manage group dynamics.
- Working with an NGO (local/international)
- Experienced working in humanitarian and emergency settings
- Experience in working with persons with disabilities in both humanitarian and development context.
Personal Skills & Technical Competencies required
- Training and Facilitation Skills: Ability to create engaging and interactive training sessions that cater to various learning styles. Proficiency in using a variety of training methods (e.g., workshops, e-learning, on-the-job training).
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and work collaboratively with participants and stakeholders
- Monitoring, mentoring and coaching
- Critically assessing and reporting the impact/effects of the training and capacity building activities
- Good communication skills in spoken and written English.
- Knowledge of French, Kiswahili and/or Sign Language is an advantage.
