About Organisation:
CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda, a Private-Not-For-Profit (PNFP) Christian hospital specialized in pediatric neurosurgery and integrated spiritual ministry.
Job Summary: The Medical Officer will provide clinical care of patients in outpatient, ward, ICU OR and outreach clinics ensuring efficient, effective and safe medical care services at CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide Primary Care Services
- Develop proficiency in Medical management and pre-operative, post operative care for surgical patients as well as assisting surgeons in theatre during operation for common neurosurgical conditions of patients seen at the hospital.
- Assess the urgency and severity of presenting problems through history taking examination and investigation.
- Examines, investigates and treats employees and their qualified dependents at the outpatients’ clinic.
- Recommending and where appropriate, undertaking relevant treatment options, including patient referral to outside specialists.
- Participates in the clinical activities of the ward which include ward rounds coverage at night and weekends as scheduled.
- Carries out prospective employee medical examinations.
- Travels to remote clinic sites to perform assessments and follow-up on patients as scheduled.
Improve Patient Health
- Ongoing health and development assessment and advice to patients.
- Health education, counselling and information provision about how to improve health and prevent disease and interventions or treatments that treat risk factors.
- Provides counseling to patients and their families.
Accuracy of information
- All information you enter into the system is accurate, appropriate and in accordance with agreed protocols.
- Clinical notes for all patient consultations must be accurately recorded in the clinical patient notes within 24 hours of seeing the patient.
- Accurate and timely operation reporting.
Communication
- Professional liaison with other health professionals is maintained.
- All staff are informed, as appropriate, about anything that they should be aware of regarding a patient, or regarding the internal workings of the practice.
- Staff and team meetings are attended as requested.
- All staff problems or issues are referred to the Clinical services manager or senior medical officer in the first instance.
- Communicates effectively with all other facility staff and disciplines to ensure successful patient care.
Professional development function
- Ongoing CME is maintained at least at the level required to maintain ongoing accreditation through the maintenance of professional standards of the UMDPC.
- Participate in practice accreditation or other quality improvement systems.
- Participation in clinical audit as required by UMDPC or other clinical or administrative indication.
- Participates in CME activities as may be organized in and outside the hospital.
- Prepares well organized health education talks for mothers and staff members.
- Identification of short-term training that can help you perform your role better.
- Participate in the scheduled training and sensitization arrangements by the hospital for all co-workers.
- Ensure that the professional training tracker card is updated as per the above-mentioned training attended.
- A minimum of 3 professional development sessions – self initiated done in the fiscal year.
Privacy Act
- Total confidentiality and privacy of patients is maintained.
Health & Safety
- Comply with established health and safety policies with regard to handling of instruments, storage of drugs and disposal of sharps and other potentially dangerous equipment and substances.
- All staff are expected to work in such a way that does not cause injury to themselves, other staff members or customers.
- Following & complying with H&S policies, processes & applying them to their own work activities, including using/wearing Personal Protective Equipment as required.
- Participating in activities directed at preventing harm & promoting well-being in the workplace Identifying, reporting & self-managing hazards where appropriate.
- Early and accurate reporting of incidents at work and raising issues of concern when identified.
- Reports any malfunction of equipment to the appropriate person (s) as soon as possible.
Occupational Health and Safety
- Ensures that the right PPE is used during each and every medical and surgical procedure.
- Ensures proper waste segregation and disposal to prevent injuries to self and others.
- Disinfects and wash all used instruments 15 mins after decontamination to prevent infection transmission.
Spiritual Ministry Participation
- Participates in the hospital’s Spiritual Ministry programs.
- Attend chapel and departmental bible studies with staff (depending on weekly schedule)

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery or its equivalent from a recognized institution
- Must have completed internship.
- Must be registered with the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council
- Ability to handle or process confidential documents or material in an appropriate manner.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, establish priorities, and work independently.
- Must be Computer literate.
- Skilled in taking patient history, physical examination and management especially of common conditions.
- Willingness and ability to adopt new knowledge and research procedures.
- Flexible attitude to duties and to hours of work with ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Maintains open communication with members of various levels of management.
- Good teamwork and interpersonal skills.
- Good oral and written communication and presentation skills
- High level planning and organizational skills including efficient and effective time management and the ability to prioritize tasks.
- At least one-year experience in or demonstrated ability and desire to learn and embrace new ideas.
