Job Summary: Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative and the direct supervision of (TBC), the incumbent will provide technical support to contribute to environmental sustainability through agroforestry and sustainable soil management for the project “Improving food security and resilience of food production systems in Karamoja” (UNJP/UGA/068/EC).
Technical Focus: The Program Analyst (Agroforestry and Sustainable Land Management) will provide technical support in the implementation of interventions on agroforestry and sustainable soil and water management on selected nutrition sensitive agri-food value chains through integrated crop, livestock and tree production systems. The incumbent will in collaboration with relevant technical persons, lead the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation and capacity building of partner staff and communities on agroforestry and sustainable management of croplands, rangelands and forest areas in selected micro-watersheds. The Programme Assistant will undertake the following primary duties in close collaboration with all relevant technical personnel.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent will be responsible for the following:
- Support the planning, implementation, and monitoring of agroforestry-and sustainable soil management interventions.
- Support preparation and/or review and implementation of land use/watershed plans and maps in target household and micro-catchments.
- Provide advice and support establishment of agroforestry demonstrations on innovative agroforestry practices for promoting sustainable integration of crops, trees and livestock depending on the local context in the target project districts in collaboration with NARO.
- Provide advice on participatory identification of appropriate indigenous tree species adapted to the local context and establishment of community managed tree nurseries using quality tree planting material,
- Develop capacity of project beneficiaries (farmers, communities) on raising appropriate tree species (especially important indigenous species at risk of over exploitation) for improved nutrition, and access to materials for medicinal, bioenergy, construction, and crafts among others.
- Support piloting of the global soil doctors programme in Karamoja in collaboration with the national promoter,
- Work closely with communications team to support the development, translation, printing, dissemination and distribution of information materials and kits on sustainable soil management.
- Provide technical support on identification and rehabilitation of degraded landscapes to improve sustainable land management practices by promoting appropriate restoration measures,
- Conduct capacity needs assessment among project beneficiaries and support in the development and delivery of appropriate training content.
- Propose project activities to improve market access / develop business plans for agroforestry, wood, and non-wood agroforestry products.
- Work closely with communications team to document good practices and human-interest stories from the project.
- Support development of monitoring tools and establishment of database for agroforestry and sustainable land management practices activities in collaboration with MEAL team and other project technical persons
- Carry out monitoring and technical backstopping of implementing partners and project beneficiaries.
- Submit monthly progress briefs and make input to technical reports other ad-hoc reports as and when required.
- Perform any other duties as required.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Minimum Requirements
- The applicant for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Programme Analyst (Agroforestry and Sustainable Land Management) job must hold a University Degree in Forestry, Agroforestry, Agroecology, Soil Science Natural Resources Management, or related fields from a recognized University,
- A minimum of two years of relevant experience in implementing multi-partner forestry and disaster Risk Management projects among rural communities in Karamoja sub-region or similar contexts,
- Knowledge of integrated community based natural resources management and participatory extension approaches is an added advantage.
- Working knowledge of English.
- National of Uganda.

Required Skills:
- Extent and relevance of experience in project implementation and monitoring using a result-based management approach.

- Experience in working with the government partners at different levels.
- Extent and relevance of experience in supporting and facilitating multi-stakeholders’ processes including interacting with policy- and decision makers at various levels, communities and private sector.
- Proven coordination skills to implement the capacity building projects and activities, including development and organization of training events at the district and local level.
- Proven leadership skills.
- Demonstrated ability to open up to innovative approaches and new practices.
- Ability to deliver project outputs and budgets on timely manner with high standard quality.
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills within team and with external stakeholders.
