Job Summary: The Laboratory Technician leads Vivo Energy Uganda’s Depot Laboratory Operations, ensuring timely and accurate re-certification of fuel quality, compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements, and maintaining a safe and efficient laboratory environment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure comprehensive testing and re-certification of white products entering depots, meeting both regional and internal standards, and update the loading Certificate of Analysis accordingly.
- Conduct daily testing and re-certification of products from selling tanks to ensure they meet product grade/batch specifications and are deemed ‘fit-for-purpose’.
- Receive and test weekly samples from the Mbale depot, verifying compliance with required quality standards.
- Perform rigorous quality tests, report results to Quality and Depot Managers, and promptly resolve product quality issues, including investigations into suspected adulteration.
- Address customer and depot complaints through detailed chemical analysis, ensuring timely resolution and customer satisfaction.
- Ensure meticulous product traceability and referencing from loading points to retail/commercial sites, actively supporting PQA Surveys.
- Provide expert advice to depot operations teams on optimal product blend ratios for non-conforming specifications.
- Conduct comprehensive training sessions for staff and contractors on product knowledge and serve as a valuable technical resource.
- Maintain, calibrate, and oversee the proper use of certified reference fuel measurement instruments, thermometers, and hydrometers.
- Collaborate closely with UNBS Laboratory staff on testing protocols and fuel marker concentration, and coordinate with external laboratories for necessary third-party testing.
- Conduct regular inventory audits of laboratory consumables and strictly adhere to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) to uphold operational standards.
- Ensure strict adherence to the Goal Zero initiative in all laboratory operations, conduct proficiency testing on samples, and determine uncertainty measurements as per standard procedures.
- Support ongoing monitoring of PMS and V-power additive dosing levels throughout the supply chain to ensure compliance with Shell Brand International requirements.
- Execute additional product quality projects and perform duties as assigned by supervisors to contribute effectively to operational objectives.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field from a reputable university.
- Two to three years of proven experience in a laboratory setting, demonstrating proficiency in laboratory testing procedures and instruments such as chromatography and spectroscopy.
- Track record of conducting chemical analysis, performing quality testing, and maintaining laboratory instruments effectively.
- Knowledge and understanding of laboratory operations, including testing methodologies, equipment calibration, and strict adherence to safety protocols.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills to manage multiple testing procedures and maintain precise records.
- Effective communication skills to report findings to management and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and cooperatively as part of a dynamic team environment.
- Experience with quality control processes and familiarity with regulatory standards, including ISO requirements.
- Understanding of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and a strong commitment to maintaining safety protocols.
- Capability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, prioritize tasks effectively, and consistently meet deadlines.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new laboratory procedures and technologies as required.
