Job Title:  Specialist in Development Services (FiED) – Digital solutions for farmer organizations and small businesses

About Project:

The project “Strengthening Rural Development in Northern Uganda II” promotes the resilience of agricultural ecosystems against climate change, creates jobs and strengthens local administrative structures. The project focuses on women, young people and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the agri-food sector and aims to promote knowledge and innovation for sustainable value creation and improve collaboration between public and private service providers. Through customized and easy-to-understand digital solutions, smallholder organizations and SMEs will have access to information and resources to improve their production and practices. Mobile applications or SMS services for weather forecasts, market prices and agronomic advice support informed decisions. Digital tools also streamline transactions by giving agricultural players access to financial services and helping them market their products more efficiently.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Needs analysis: Identification of digitalization needs of farmer organizations and SMEs and, if available, an assessment of currently used digital tools in terms of functionality, affordability and user-friendliness
• Technology selection: Identification of appropriate digital solutions, requirements for their use, and training needs adapted to the specific contexts of the users
• Implementation: Training and coaching in the application of the selected digital solutions and their integration into existing operational processes
• Monitoring and evaluation: Monitoring the use of digital technologies by farmer organizations and small businesses and assessing their impact on operational performance and competitiveness
• Sustainability and Scalability: Assist in developing long-term strategies to sustain and scale digital initiatives
• Partnerships and resourcing: Support building partnerships with technology providers and other relevant stakeholders to mobilize additional resources and support for digitalization initiatives

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• Completed professional training or degree in one or more of the following areas: international development, social sciences, digital communication, agricultural economics or similar
• Experience in advising organizations and/or companies
• Ability to develop strategies to effectively implement digital solutions, as well as the ability to communicate with and train various stakeholders
• Understanding of the challenges, needs and opportunities of smallholder organizations and SMEs in rural contexts, including knowledge of socio-cultural and socio-economic aspects
• Knowledge of, or willingness to acquire, digitalization and digital solutions, including knowledge of various digital platforms, applications and technologies relevant to agriculture and SMEs in rural areas
• Local knowledge and cultural sensitivity: the ability to develop solutions that fit local contexts and are accepted by communities
• Fluent English skills
