Global Health Uganda (GHU) is a registered not for profit, limited liability company with the mission to promote child health by conducting and facilitating quality and relevant research in child health, neurodevelopment and interventions.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collect, receive, process, and aliquot study participants’ biological specimens including venous blood, urine, and stool, among others.
- Prepare, stain, and examine thick and thin malaria microscopy smears for parasite detection/quantification and species identification, respectively.
- Prepare Dried Blood Spots (DBS) using filter papers.
- Perform rapid diagnostic tests (malaria, HIV, Schistosoma, etc.,)
- Print barcoded labels to identify participants’ biological specimens/aliquots, slides, and laboratory request forms.
- Perform tests using automated equipment such as chemistry analyzer among others.
- Prepare samples for -80°C freezer storage.
- Complete study Case Report Forms (CRFs).
- Log participants’ specimen aliquots into a sample/data management system.
- Participate in data entry into an electronic data management system.
- Ensure proper maintenance of laboratory equipment including microscopes, centrifuge, micropipettes, etc.
- Stock management to ensure continued availability of sufficient supplies of consumables, test kits, and reagents, avoiding preventable stockouts and expiries.
- Participate in laboratory SOP development, and review as shall be assigned.
- Any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor or Laboratory Director.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences or Bachelor of Biomedical Laboratory Technology degree from a recognized university in Uganda.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a research setting
- Substantial malaria microscopy skills ranging from thick and thin smear preparation, staining, parasite screening, quantitation and species identification.
- Basic computer skills including Microsoft applications
- Registration with the Uganda Allied Health Professional’s Council with a valid Practicing License
- Possession of certificates in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and /or Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) is an added advantage.
- Attention to detail
- Good verbal and communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal, and team working skills
- Time management skills, with ability to work under pressure and prioritize tasks
- Willingness to work for extended hours and sometimes during the weekend.
