Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.

 

Job Summary:  The Lab Assistant will carry out basic laboratory tests for diagnosis of diseases with focus on Gene Xpert testing and other HIV/AIDS related tests.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Preparing laboratory reagents and stains for routine investigations;
  • Conduct Gene Xpert tests and reporting at the supported facility
  • Carry out basic laboratory tests and submit reports to Laboratory Technicians/Technologists;
  • Observe safety and quality assurance practices in laboratories;
  • Cleaning laboratory equipment regularly;
  • Requisitioning necessary supplies for laboratory work and keeping records of stock;
  • Participating in SLIPTA activities;
  • Supporting EQA activities in relation to HIV DTS, TB, Gene Xpert and CD4;
  • Compiling and submitting daily and periodic laboratory reports;
  • Ensure Safe disposal of Laboratory wastes;





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Certificate in Medical Laboratory techniques
  • Must have a Certificate in Medical Laboratory Techniques from a recognized Training Institution.
  • Must be registered and licensed with the Allied Health Professionals Council.
  • At least two years of working in a clinical setting/ facility, preferably in an HIV/AIDS setting.
  • Additional experience in logistics management of ART commodities
  • Computer Knowledge and skills, as well as good presentation and report writing skills
  • Communication skills and ability to speak local languages is an added advantage
  • HIV Counseling and Interpersonal skills
  • Concern for quality and standards of Laboratory services;
  • Result orientation;
  • Communicating effectively; and
  • Good Time management
  • Willingness to work and live in rural areas is required.
