Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) is a youth-led gender-balanced Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that advocates for environmental sustainability and community development. Founded in 2014 in Ghana, GAYO is dedicated to raising awareness, educating, and building the capacity of different stakeholders to adopt sustainable environmental practices that satisfy the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to have a good quality of life. As part of the Green Africa Youth Organization’s aim to expand across other African countries, we have established the GAYO in Uganda office to advance the mission of researching to provide solutions to pressing environmental issues through youth empowerment and public education. To achieve its objective, GAYO works with various institutions and multiple levels of governance to implement climate change, circular economy, and disaster risk reduction projects within communities.
Job Summary: GAYO Uganda seeks to hire a Research Officer responsible for shaping the development of GAYO’s external engagement strategy.
GAYO has identified the need for an organizational research function to spearhead and improve our research capacity. Under the supervision of the Country Manager, the Research Officer will be responsible for supporting the research team’s Disaster Risk portfolio. The successful candidate will work closely with to conduct research, facilitate interviews and focused group discussions and, analyze data and produce outputs, including scientific articles, reports and briefs for circulation and policy guidance. The Research Officer will support the delivery of high-quality, sector-relevant applied research, focusing on disaster Risk and waste management Nexus.
The Research Officer will coordinate with other officers within the organization to ensure the smooth and successful delivery of his/her functions. The core responsibilities of the role are listed below, however, other duties may be required based on organizational needs.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: In addition to the above, the Research Officer will perform the following specific duties:
- Co-lead the development of the research paper Landfill Management, disaster risk and Public Health to be completed in 3 months.
- Research coherent sector-related conventions and institutions (Sendai Framework, SDGs, Paris Agreement, Biodiversity convention, UNCCD, SAICM);
- Coordinate primary and secondary data collection during research including designing survey questionnaires and organizing consultations and discussions.
- Support research team in producing research papers, reports, and policy briefs among others;
- Maintain an efficient research database in our cloud storage platform, safeguarding the confidentiality and data protection of subjects;
- Establish strong relationships with sector-related research professionals and institutions including designing Memorandum of Understanding with external entities to carry out research.
- Identify and represent GAYO at all sector-relevant events following research publications and reports.
- Under the supervision of the Country Manager, identify and apply for research grants/opportunities within GAYO’s areas of work;
- Support the M&E function of the organization and identify best practices for the success of projects and engagement in Uganda.
- Perform other related duties as needed by the organization.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Climate Change, Sustainability Science, and related disciplines.
- Excellent research skills, including conducting literature reviews and quantitative and qualitative data analyses.
- Good self-management skills.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- A creative problem solver.
- Desirable competencies
- Good knowledge of key international institutions and issues related to climate change, environmental sustainability and waste management.
- Knowledge of spatial survey softwares (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS) and statistical softwares (e.g., SPSS, Stata, R)
- Excellent IT skills.
- Bilingual (e.g. French)
Skills
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to present research findings to different audiences.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently when necessary.
- Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
- Excellent verbal and written English-language skills.
- Ability to prioritize and work with strict deadlines.

Working hours: 40 per week (full time).
