About US Embassy:
The United States Embassy in Kampala, Uganda has enjoyed diplomatic relations with Uganda for over 30 years. Ambassador Natalie E. Brown currently heads the U.S Mission to Uganda. The Mission is composed of several offices and organizations all working under the auspices of the Embassy and at the direction of the Ambassador.
Among the offices operating under the U.S Mission to Uganda are:
- United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
- Centers for Disease Control (CDC)
- Peace Corps
Job Summary: The Chauffeur (COM/DCM/PO/CG) operates safely a fully armored vehicle (FAV) to transport the Ambassador, Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM), Consul General (CG), and/or Principal Officer (PO) within the city and the surrounding areas. Ensures that the vehicle is in clean and serviceable condition and performs minor preventive maintenance.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Chauffeur to COM, DCM, CG, or PO: 50%
- Safely operates a fully armored vehicle (FAV) to transport COM, DCM, CG, or PO within the city and the surrounding areas. Reacts defensively in response to potential security threat-related situations.
- Safely operates the Ambassador’s Protective Detail’s Lead Car, Follow Car, and DCM Limousines on a rotational basis.
- Acts as alert observer and prevents unauthorized access to the vehicle and the surrounding area while waiting to pick up the COM, DCM, CG, or PO.
- Analyses the daily appointment schedule, ensuring familiarity with both a primary and alternate route to the destination, as well as potential security concerns at destination.
- Serves as a special messenger in delivering documents or invitations or in completing other various errands for the COM, DCM, PO, or CG.
Vehicle Maintenance: 30%
- Cleans, polishes and checks vehicle before and after operation to ensure that it is in serviceable condition.
- Conducts vehicle inspection and reports vehicle deficiencies to the supervisor.
- Performs minor vehicle maintenance repairs, as needed.
Reporting: 15%
- Completes daily trip ticket after vehicle inspection.
- Prepares accident and vehicle reports, trip logs and travel documents.
- Records miles driven daily.
Other: 5%
- Functions as a Motor pool chauffeur, as needed.
- Conducts radio communications.
- Operates armored/non-armored vehicles.
- Drives in motorcades for visiting dignitaries such as the U.S. President, Secretary of State, members of Congress, flag military officers etc. as assigned.
- Instructs rental car drivers in proper motorcade driving, as needed. Handles cash up to $1000.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
NOTE: All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item.
- The applicants for the United States US Embassy Chauffeur job should have completed a high school education. Required.
- At least three years of professional driving experience is required.
- Mission’s protocol procedures as it relates to the Front Office. State Department vehicle safety standards. Motor pool rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of the location of other Missions, host Government institutions, and NGOs.
- Knowledge of local traffic laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of in-country travel routes and areas.
- General awareness of the general political climate in the country related to protests, demonstrations, and riots.
- Must hold a valid and legally obtained driver’s license. Operates level C or D armored vehicle with defensive driving skills.
- Must be able to diagnose and handle preventive maintenance and first-echelon automotive repairs.
- Ability to detect vehicle defects and report them immediately to authorities concerned.
- Must quickly and calmly evaluate risks and alternative actions always assuring the maximum safety of the passengers.
- Must be able to deal with high level officials in a relaxed and competent manner.
- Must have basic computer skills to maintain reports and for communication purposes.
- Language: English level II (Limited knowledge) Reading/Writing/Speaking is required. This may be tested.
