About US:
Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries is a Government Ministry charged with creating an enabling environment in the Agricultural Sector. It is commonly known as Ministry of Agriculture and carries out its role by enhancing crop production, improving food and nutrition security, widening export base and improved incomes of the farmers.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent will be responsible to the Commissioner for performing the following duties:-
- Providing overall policy, advice and supervision on handling and marketing of both edible and non-edible animal products;
- Ensuring commercial production of animal products while giving advice on costs of production;
- Providing animal production and marketing figures and projections and disseminating market information to extension staff for transmission to producers and marketing firms;
- Providing technical guidance for planning, siting and construction of slaughterhouses and ensuring that recommended plans which minimize pre and post slaughter losses of meat and hides and skins are available to stakeholders;
- Encouraging establishment of marketing associations and co-operative societies;
- Co-ordinating and advising on cross cutting issues (environment, gender, HIV Aids) related to the marketing and processing of animal products;
- Liaising with CLH&E and others controlling import and export of animal by-products;
- Promoting use of appropriate agro-industry technology in processing and handling animal productions;
- Overseeing licensing for trade in animals and their by-products;
- Formulating and reviewing laws and regulations pertaining to domestic and international marketing of animal products;
- Formulating and evaluating staff performance;
- Preparing Divisional work-plans and budgets;
- Preparing Divisional reports;
- Promoting development of tanneries and leather craft industries;
- Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Applicants should be Ugandans holding an Honours Bachelors of science Degree in Veterinary Medicine; or Animal Production Technology and Management from a recognized University/Institution. Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Veterinary Medicine; or Veterinary Public Health; or Veterinary Preventive Medicine; or any related science field. A post graduate qualification in management or administration will be an added advantage. Applicants should be registered and licensed by the Uganda Veterinary Board.
- Applicants should have a minimum of nine (9) years relevant working experience in the field of veterinary medicine or animal science with a bias in livestock production, veterinary public health or livestock marketing, three (3) of which should have been served at the level of Principal Veterinary Officer/Inspector in Government.
