Uganda Airlines is the flag carrier of Uganda. The company is a revival of the older Uganda Airlines which operated from 1977 until 2001. It began flying in August 2019.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Safety, Security, Risk management
- Ensure all policies are established, effectively communicated to staff and a monitoring mechanism is implemented.
- Ensure all safety records are stored, maintained, and updated regularly. UCCA to be informed of any breaches as may be required by regulation.
- Liaise with departments to solve challenges related to safety and security.
- Assist operations staff in reducing or changing risky and harmful lifestyle behavior.
- Make sure there is a safety and security register in place.
- Ascertain that all potential risks are analyzed, and mitigation measures are in place.
- Train the committee members to keep abreast with current aviation risk management practices.
- Recommend training to HR for all departments where necessary.
Operations Strategy
- Work with all departments to formulate a functional operations strategy; commercial, Engineering, Flight Operations, and Ground operations are critical in this.
- Develop an operations performance scoreboard (matrix) to measure progress.
- Regularly evaluate the performance of the airline and with senior management, make sustainable and meaningful recommendations.
- Benchmark from other Airlines for best practice approaches.
- Set up operations review strategy meetings with key departments to update the CEO on a regular basis
- Implement the four Disciplines of Strategy Execution training for the operations team.
- Periodically review the performance of the Airline by route, schedule, and other parameters for maximization.
- Work with the operations aspects of the outstations to ascertain smooth workings and address challenges.
Budgets and control
- Participate in the write-up of the operational budgets in liaison with all departments.
- Ensure all expenses are in line with the budget and assist in expediting some approvals.
- Ensure all financial accountabilities are accurate, timely, and ethical.
- Participate in budgetary reviews with the relevant teams regularly.
- Negotiating contracts, agreements, and partnerships with vendors where applicable to ensure value for money.
Operational feedback communication
- Commitment to delivering exceptional customer experience.
- Maintaining awareness and a sound knowledge of operational developments, theory and methods and providing suitable feedback to Heads, managers and staff within Uganda Airlines.
- Collection of feedback from staff regarding operations improvements to the principle of inclusive leadership.
- Display of all operations matrices and score cards for the general information of all staff.
- Motivating and encouraging all operations staff to participate in companywide initiatives to improve the airline.
- Work with commercial and PR to ensure the external stakeholders have the right information.
- Collaborate closely with department leaders to prepare board documents for submission and defend the proposed airline initiatives.
Relationship management
- Maintaining good relationships with all the airline regulatory bodies and other Government Ministries; IATA, ICAO, UCAA, and other missions.
- Ensure that the Airline can benefit from all possible relations to prosper in business.
Compliance and Monitoring
- Work with all the heads of departments to ensure that the Airline is compliant in all aspects within the operations sphere.
- Ensure that all personnel in the operations departments undergo the mandatory training.
IT Systems Accuracy
- Work with the IT department to ensure smooth IT operations for our passengers and staff.
Other duties
- Perform any other duties as might be required by the CEO from time to time.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in aviation management, Engineering, Business, or a related field.
- A Master’s degree in a related field is an added advantage
- Leadership: A business professional with at least 10 years of senior management level experience within aviation/Airline in international aspects.
- Previous experience as an airline COO, a post-holder, or an Accountable Manager will be an advantage.
- Training in aviation skills will be of an advantage.
- Deep knowledge and thorough experience in the operational areas, including flight operations, maintenance, safety, and operations management.
- Financial acumen: Understanding of financial metrics, budgeting, and resource allocation to optimize performance and profitability.
- Communication: Outstanding leadership experience, resulting in an excellent ability to communicate and direct a large operational organization.
- Strategic planning: Demonstrated knowledge in developing and implementing strategic plans to achieve goals and objectives and drive sustainable growth.
- Well-known and respected reputation within the Airline industry.
- Proven, success leading an Operational unit through a collaborative, unifying approach that builds on teamwork and dedication to Company goals and principles.
