Lutheran World Federation (LWF) Uganda is part of the LWF World Service and we are currently supporting Congolese and South-Sudanese refugees living in settlements in the districts of Kamwenge, Adjumani, Moyo, Kyangwali and Lamwo respectively.
Job Summary: The Production Assistant will be tasked with the coordination, supervision, and implementation of all the project activities within the production and Nursery bed management sector by the project description and budget provisions as detailed in the agreements.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work with the production Officer to initiate and coordinate the planning and implementation of the Nursery Bed activities in liaison with other sections, and ensures optimum utilization of project resources at minimum cost.
- In conjunction with the Production Officer, liaise with and work in cooperation with the relevant local authorities, local community leaders, relevant civil society and non-governmental organizations, collaborating/implementing partners, and other stakeholders where appropriate to achieve the Nursey Bed objectives, and facilitate project implementation.
- Oversee and improve the daily functions of the Nursery Bed.
- Supervise the day-to-day operations of the nursery, including watering, potting, and weeding plants, fertilizing them, and monitoring insect and disease infestation
- Monitor weather conditions and pay special attention to hot and dry temperatures.
- Create staff work rosters and delegate duties for Nursery bed attendants.
- Requesting for nursery bed stock including seeds, soil, stones, fertilizers, shrubs, plants, and trees etc.
- Control the inventory of plants and supplies to ensure that there is enough stock to meet demand
- Growing plants, trees, and shrubs to use as stock/ Mother gardens.
- Create attractive plant displays at the Nursery sites.
- Collect and compile regularly field data on Nursery bed activities carried out, and undertake impact assessments using participatory approaches for all beneficiaries to determine the relevance and impact of the project assistance
- Assist the Production Officer to prepare periodical work plans and progress/status reports on Agro-forestry project activities and achievements in line with the requirements stipulated in the project documents
- Prepare and submit reports to the Production Officer as required and Perform any other official duties that may be assigned from time to time by the Project Officer, the Project Manager, or his/her designate.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a relevant degree in Forestry, Ecology, Biology, Integrated Plant Sciences
- At least three years of experience in horticulture, forestry, environment
- Good computer skills and knowledge using Microsoft Office programs
- Extensive experience in nursery management and procedures
- Experience working on greenfield projects under minimal supervision
- Excellent communication and organization skills
- Strong hands-on skills
- Ability to work well with chemicals and pesticides.
- Excellent reporting skills.
- Mature, pragmatic, and flexible approach, strong commercial judgment
- Team player but comfortable working autonomously
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Good negotiation skills
- Valid riding permit
- Good attention to detail
- Rigorous and organized approach
- Hands-on, ready to roll up the sleeves.
- Result-oriented
- Strong work ethic
- Ability to work effectively under pressure
- Knowledge of the local languages (Madi/Arabic).
