Water Journalists Africa, established in 2011 as a not-for-profit media organization, boasts a membership of journalists hailing from 50 African countries, dedicated to reporting on water, climate change, and wildlife across the continent. Our multifaceted approach encompasses the identification of cross-border water, wildlife and climate change data and narratives, the training and mentorship of journalists in environmental, data, and science journalism, and the facilitation of in-depth investigative reporting.
Job Summary: The Finance Assistant will provide financial and administrative support to WJA – InfoNile as per our donor regulations and procedures.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Providing secretarial support including timely printing, photocopying, scanning of documents both in hard and soft copy while managing filing system for record and control of key documents.
- Support the delivery and collection of documents, supplies and paperwork to and from different places as requested by the supervisor.
- Provide logistical support and back-up in the planning of conferences, meetings, workshops and retreats
- Ensure that the office is kept tidy and clean through regular cleaning of office premises and the compound.
- Maintain proper filing of all financial documentation including vouchers, contracts, tender documents, invoices, receipts etc. to ensure proper record keeping and facilitate future audits.
- Perform other duties incidental to the above assigned from time to time by the project Accountant
- Maintain petty cash ledgers and ensure that the Petty cash replenishment is prepared the moment the paid cash is 75% of the cash float.
- Support the project accountant and ensure that data is posted on a daily basis, and that the financial information is processed accurately and reliable reports are generated timely
- Perform systems analysis to identify any irregularities (such as wrong posting) and propose immediate corrective actions to the accountant.
- Perform other administrative woks such as booking flights, hotels, and other facilities necessary for the proper coordination of programs activities.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Bachelors Degree in Accounting and Finance or Business Administration
- One year of relevant work experience.
- Good communication skills
- Advanced proficiency in Excel, and word
- Highly motivated, results-oriented, and with well-developed problem-solving skills
- Proven commitment to accountability practices
- Proven ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work with limited supervision
- Advanced English proficiency and fluency in the local language
