Job Title:  Communications Officer (Fresher Jobs)

Duty Station:  Kampala, Uganda

About US:

The Uganda Rugby Union is the governing body for rugby union in Uganda. It was established in 1959 and is responsible for organising local competitions and the Rugby Cranes national representative team. The URU is a member of both World Rugby and Rugby Africa.

Job Summary:   The primary role of the Communications Officer is to nurture a strong media industry network, increase awareness and develop an enviable corporate image for URU by developing and executing effective communication and media relations programs and 360-degree communications and content plan.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develop a marketing communications plan including strategy, goals, budget and tactics.
• Develop media relations strategy, seeking high-level placements in print, broadcast, and online media.
• Coordinate all public relations activities.
• Direct social media team to engage audience across traditional and new media.
• Leverage existing media relationships and cultivate new contacts within the broader Rugby fraternity.
• Keep an eye on the latest social media trends
• Develop and lead execution of a content plan across the various social media channels.
• Manage media inquiries and interview requests.
• Strengthen relationships with all media personnel
• Create content for press releases, byline articles and keynote presentations
• Monitor, analyse and communicate PR results on a quarterly basis
• Evaluate opportunities for partnerships, sponsorships and advertising on an ongoing basis
• Analyse campaign data and web traffic metrics
• Build relationships with thought leaders to raise industry awareness

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication, Journalism, Marketing, Advertising or a related discipline.
• Additional qualifications (Desirable): Postgraduate/certificate in communication related field
• One year of experience in a busy Public Relations and Communication environment.
• Demonstrate strong leadership qualities and can delegate effectively.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong planning ability with excellent organizational skills
• Ability and willingness to work outside of normal hours including evening and weekends.
• Ability to manage a group of participants effectively.
• Proven working experience in public relations required.
• Proven track record designing and executing successful public relations campaigns at both a local and national level.
• Strong relationships with both local and national federations,
• Government and industry media outlets.
• Exceptional writing and editing skills.
• Solid experience with social media including blogs, Facebook, X platform, etc.
• Event planning experience

Desirable

• Two years or more hands on experience in a paid or voluntary capacity
