The Communications Officer, Africa will play a key role in advancing NRGI’s mission by developing and implementing strategic communication initiatives in Africa. The officer will be responsible for fostering media relations, and creating content that effectively communicates NRGI’s mission, ensures our visibility and conveys impacts of the Africa program. The officer will work closely with the Africa Director and Regional team to ensure alignment with communications and program strategies to serve as a vital member of the global communications team.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensuring excellent brand representation and stakeholder engagement across relevant regional events in the sector and media channels.
- Help localize approaches and content.
- Help promote country and regional projects.
- Provide regional input and feedback to global communications efforts, and support organization-wide communications.
- Assist country and regional teams in the development of their communications skills, media engagements, tools and in their communications activities.
- This position requires a dynamic individual with an excellent command of communications disciplines and an understanding of the media landscape, familiarity with natural resource governance issues, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders.

- Work collaboratively with colleagues in the region to develop an Africa-specific communication strategy that will activate and enable the organization-wide strategy.
- Oversee the implementation of the communication strategy for the Africa Region, ensuring visibility of the program, that results are achieved, and key learning is captured and acted upon.
- Strengthen NRGI presence in Africa through traditional and new media forms, perfecting the targeting and tailoring of messaging and engagement across channels and platforms.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Master’s degree in relevant field (communication, public affairs, journalism, development, political science, economics, international affairs).
- Experience managing across traditional and new media channels (social media, video, and audio)
- At least 5 years of directly relevant experience in public relations, journalism, policy communications and/or international development
- Networking of relevant contacts in media
- Experience managing campaigns from inception to post roll-out learning and feedback.
- Able to use social media strategically and to further impact.
- Familiarity with brand management
- Experience working in a complex or pioneering environment, including managing, and creating opportunities for systemic change.
- Having the gravitas, credibility, and ability to initiate and develop strategic relationships and influence key stakeholders at a project, country, and region level.
- Familiarity with natural resource governance and a commitment to promoting transparency and accountability
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural and fast-paced environment.
- Excellent written and verbal skills in English
- French fluency is an advantage.
