Yalelo (U) Limited is a tilapia fish farm that was established in Uganda in 2019. The farm is located in Butembe, Buikwe district on the shores of Lake Victoria. Yalelo Uganda is a subsidiary of First Wave Group B.V; a Dutch company with a portfolio of aquaculture related assets in Africa. First Wave Group owns and operates Yalelo Zambia, a pioneer of Aquaculture founded in 2011 that has grown quickly to become the leading fish farm in Zambia and among the largest aquaculture farms in Africa.
Job Summary: The Risk and Compliance officer is responsible for monitoring all matters of risk and compliance at Yalelo Uganda including the implementation of risk management strategies, coordination of risk and compliance processes, monitoring and review of risk management policies, systems, tools, and programs in accordance with the acceptable risk management practices and guidelines and the relevant laws and regulations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintaining the risk register and developing/managing an analytical framework for assessing the severity of risks/deriving its Risk Profile.
- Providing technical and administrative support for scenario modeling exercises in relation to major risks and populating/maintaining a consistent dashboard that reflects the output from these exercises.
- Develop and compile any metrics to be used for risk management and socialize them with business and management. Maintain risk databases and methodology documents.
- Write/Prepare and update risk policies, and manuals as directed and provide supporting documentation to risk committees to secure their approval.
- Build a network of informal contacts across the organization such as to be able to both gather intelligence and exercise ‘soft’ influence.
- Work with Manager Risk, Security and Compliance to promote a positive risk culture within the Company, seeking to provide the materials and the environment for open discussion and debate.
- Develop a reputation as a risk management expert to monitor, benchmark, and recommend best practices in large corporations in general and in the industry.
- Execute the annual compliance plan under the direction and supervision of a compliance manager.
- Facilitate investigation and reporting of suspicious transactions.
- Perform risk and compliance reviews and audits.
- Provide risk and compliance advisory to business units and business functions.
- Provide support to the Risk, Security & Compliance manager in organizing, designing, and delivering risk and compliance training.
- Recognise common risk and compliance vulnerabilities and recommend controls to mitigate the risks.
- Monitor weekly and monthly Key Risk Indicators and work with departments to close the KRIs.
- Prepare reports to Management on the Risk and Compliance environment.
- Conduct monthly compliance audits to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or any other related field. Professional certifications such as CPA or ACCA are an added advantage.
- At least five years of experience working in risk management, compliance, or internal audit at a major listed corporation/organization. Work experience in an FMCG or Dairy commercial firm is desirable.
- Strong communication skills, both on paper and in person, able to work effectively with a variety of stakeholders and to build strong relationships.
- Analytical mindset with an enthusiasm for learning new things, researching issues, and developing new insights on established and emerging issues. Numeracy and logic will be important attributes to support effectiveness.
- Presentation skills, the ability to write concise reports, organize materials, and prepare PowerPoint presentations are all very desirable.
- Curious disposition, inclined to question and challenge and to seek understanding of issues while always maintaining the respect of stakeholders.
- Flexibility and adaptability, since the role involves constant movements to different locations within assigned territory.
- Should be a strategic and analytical thinker who is driven by results and can innovate and develop creative financial solutions.
- Strong management and leadership skills together with excellent communication, influencing, negotiating, and engagement skills.
- Sound judgment and decision-making skills, with a ‘hands-on’, problem-solving approach, able to remain calm under pressure and take control of incidents.
- Very customer-oriented, keen to work in partnership with Business Units to seek positive outcomes.
- Excellent Excel & PowerPoint skills
