Job Summary: The Program Officer – Livestock will provide technical support to the implementation of the Karamoja Goats project geared towards sustainability of the GOATS project. She/He will oversee the performance of the livestock activities through the send a goat approach/methodology in collaboration with the community-based extension workers and Community Animal Health Workers (CAHW’s).
Key Duties and Responsibilities: Under the overall supervision of the Project Manager of the Karamoja Goats project, the job holder will ensure technical execution of the project activities with high level of efficiency and effectiveness as follows:
- Provide input into the detailed implementation plan, procurement plan, update the risk matrix of the project activities.
- Prepare activity concepts on time based on approved plan for all activities related to livestock management.
- Ensure awareness creation and mobilization of the community to support the right target and sustainability of the intervention.
- Collaborate with the MEAL focal staff to track and take record of weekly births of kids and ensure appropriate management done to mitigate deaths.
- Work with the local security structure to ensure the procured goats or kids passed on through the send a goat approach are safe.
- Mobilize the community to participate in the identification of the appropriate nutrition sensitive activities using appropriate participatory monitoring and evaluation approach.
- Support communities to set up their respective nutritional goals, develop action plans, map-out resources, factoring in gender mainstreaming at every stage of implementation.
- Ensure capacity building plans for the care groups, Community Based Trainers are developed and delivered effectively to facilitate timely and technical delivery of the project activities.
- Ensure that development and utilization of Activity Tracking Tool for the project is available for use.
- Ensures adequate monitoring of input and output through the Intervention Performance Tracking Tool (IPPT) and Output Tracker.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: To be a strong supporter and advocate for children in this role you will need to have:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in veterinary sciences or animal sciences.
- Minimum of three years working experience in a livestock-focused role in an INGO or agri-business.
- Experience of working with pastoralist communities especially in Karamoja region.
- Experience of working with community animal health workers and developing rural veterinary service systems
- Experience of training others in goat husbandry and breeding and working with exotic goat species
- Experience in implementation of livelihoods programmes with behavior change components.
- Able to demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of project strategy, design, implementation, monitoring, and reporting.
- Extensive knowledge and experience in application of participatory tools and methodologies in programming.
- Motorcycle riding skills are a must (riding permit)
- Experience of working with local partners and District Local Government in Child Rights Governance, gender, Health, Nutrition, Education, HIV/AIDS, or Child Protection is an added advantage.
- Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s aims, values, and principles.
