Aga Khan University has established four medical centres in Kampala, with the first opening in 2012. They offer consultations and referrals to specialist services. The Aga Khan University Hospital in Kampala is currently under construction.
Job Summary: The Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi in conjunction with the Aga Khan Health Service in Uganda seek to recruit a Clinical Pathologist to be based in Kampala, Uganda.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- The Incumbent will undertake clinical diagnostic functions under the supervision of the Chair Department of Pathology. In this role, the incumbent undertakes diagnosis and management of patients (and their specimens) attending or referred to the clinic for diagnostic tests.
- He/she may perform certain diagnostic procedures that contribute to patient management.
- He/she will provide specialist diagnostic services in hematopathology, chemical pathology, clinical microbiology and immunopathology. Specifically, he/she will report peripheral blood films, perform and report bone marrow aspirates and trephine biopsies, perform FNAs, interpret coagulation tests, read and interpret microbiology cultures and antimicrobial sensitivity tests, and review biochemistry results. The pathologist has the ultimate responsibility for the test results, the quality and safety standards of the laboratory, advising clinicians on the interpretation of test results and the further investigation of the patient.
- As a specialist and lead in diagnostics, he/she will see to it that testing complies with the quality management system.
- He/she will take the lead in selection and review of test menu and equipment, validation of assays and contribute to continuous medical education for the technologists.
- Communicates effectively with clinicians and other specialists about testing needs and test reports, with other lab staff on testing methodologies and quality control, and with patients and wider community on issues relating to laboratory medicine.
- He/she practices pathology ethically, consistent with the obligations of a medical specialist.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Applicants must hold a Masters of Medicine in Pathology.
- S/he must be registered with Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Council as a specialist.
- S/he should have a minimum of 5 years’ clinical experience at a reputable institution.
- The ideal candidate should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
