Lutheran World Federation (LWF) Uganda is part of the LWF World Service and we are currently supporting Congolese and South-Sudanese refugees living in settlements in the districts of Kamwenge, Adjumani, Moyo, Kyangwali and Lamwo respectively.
Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Project Officer, the Project Assistant – Agro Forestry will be responsible for coordination, supervision, and implementation of all the project activities within the Agro-Forestry/Environment sector and in line with LWF Policies and Procedures.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Works with the Project Officer to initiate and coordinate the planning and implementation of the Agro-forestry project activities in liaison with other sections, and ensures optimum utilization of project resources at minimum cost;
- Work in close conjunction with the Project Officer, liaises with and works in cooperation with the relevant local authorities, local community leaders, relevant civil society and non-governmental organizations, collaborating/implementing partners, and other stakeholders where appropriate to achieve the Agro-forestry project objectives, and facilitate project implementation;
- Collects and compiles regularly field data on Agro-forestry project activities carried out, and undertakes impact assessments using participatory approaches for all beneficiaries to determine the relevance and impact of the project assistance;
- Regularly visits all beneficiaries and beneficiary sites where Agro-forestry project activities are undertaken, checks on progress, and offers technical support as directed by the Project Officer in line with the project objectives;
- Promotes the active participation of local community leadership structures, beneficiaries, and intermediaries in the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of agroforestry project activities as required;
- Assists the Project Officer in identifying individuals and groups whose Agro-forestry interests and related community-felt needs have been marginalized as well as potential intermediaries;
- Conducts on-site mobilization, sensitization, and training on basic appropriate agroforestry and related environmental management practices and techniques;
- Offers and delivers advocacy and material support to individuals and groups with marginalized Agro-forestry interests and links them to other collaborating partners/service providers;
- Ensures sensitivity to the crosscutting issues during implementation of the Agro-forestry project as stipulated in the country program’s strategic direction;
- Supervises and supports local community leadership structures at the sub-county level for the effective implementation of Agro-forestry project field activities;
- Work in close consultation with the Project Officer, liaises with and provides technical support to the relevant local authorities, community leaders, civil society/non-governmental organizations, collaborating/implementing partners, and other stakeholders where appropriate to ensure proper coordination of Agro-forestry project activities, promotion of inter-agency cooperation and smooth implementation of the transition plan;
- Prepares distribution lists for tree seedlings and other Agro-forestry inputs in liaison with the Project Officer and local community leaders and ensures equitable distribution of project items to the right beneficiaries;
- Assists the Project Officer to prepare periodical work plans and progress/status reports on Agro-forestry project activities and achievements in line with the requirements stipulated in the project documents;
- Prepares and submits reports to the Project Officer as required; and
- Performs any other official duties that may be assigned from time to time by the Project Officer, the Project Manager, or his/her designate.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a relevant degree in Forestry, Ecology or Biology
- Two to four years of experience implementing agroforestry projects/activities in the field
- Experience managing tree/vegetable nurseries
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with partner organizations, including governments, international and local NGOs, and community groups
- Ability to communicate publicly (written and oral) with a wide range of audiences, including community members, donors, NGOs, government, and colleagues at all levels
- Good computer skills and knowledge using Microsoft Office programs
- Valid riding permit
- High integrity, self-driven, and able to set own work schedule with rigorous deadlines.
- Ability to initiate and complete assignments and to work under demanding circumstances with minimal supervision.
- Strong organization, supervisory, problem-solving, interpersonal, communication as well as team building and negotiation skills.
