The Medical Research Council (MRC UK) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts.
Job Summary: The Data Management Assistant will manage data for assigned studies which includes: setting up the databases, providing data management support, weekly reports on study progress, and conducting basic data analysis.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Retrieval of GPC study documents from the Archive for data cleaning purposes and provide a summary report on the retrieved documents;
- Move with filed workers to the villages to help in data collection from GPC participants;
- Questionnaire and Consent form review:
- Review questionnaires/CRFs and consent forms for the previous rounds of the GPC to ensure they are complete;
- Edit and update incomplete questionnaires and share the finalized copies with the DM; and,
- Perform quality control checks and follow-up to ensure that the completed questionnaires/CRFs and consent forms for all rounds of the GPC are uploaded to the digital platform.
Screen testing:
- Testing data entry screens that have been created by the Data Managers (DM) / Data Programmers;
Data entry:
- Retrieve and enter data of missing records into designated databases i.e. REDCap & ODK; and,
- Record information about the given data and data entry files for monitoring purposes.
Report data entry problems:
- Highlight and report problems that occur during data entry to the database manager in charge of the dataset. These include data that are unreadable, out-of-range, and inconsistent with the interactive checks provided by the data entry programs; and,
- Highlight modifications required to data entry screens to the database manager.
Data verification:
- Run validation programs to ensure the data entered exactly matches the data on the hard copy; and,
- Print reports to identify and solve discrepancies, missing data, and other problems with the data in the databases.
Quality Control and assurance
- Perform validation on the digitalized study documents of the previous rounds of the GPC to ensure the completeness and accuracy of the digitalization process;
- Perform quality control on a sample of digitalized study documents to ensure that scanned copies match the physical copies; and,
- Compile and produce a data audit report for the digitalized study documents for the previous rounds of the GPC.
Data back-up:
- Ensure a backup of the entered data has been stored in the secure environment at the Unit.
Data cleaning under the supervision of a DM:
- Look up hard copies of records with data inconsistencies; and,
- Compile reports of inconsistencies and rectify them on the database.
Other tasks:
- Under supervision, to perform other tasks as required by the data Manager or senior staff in the data section.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Diploma or Degree in data / research related field; Diploma in secretarial studies;
- Training in data protection, data quality, good clinical practices or other related.
- Certificate in MS Office applications is an added advantage;
- Should possess experience in data management preferably in a medical research setting;
- Two years of experience in data entry;
- Experience in conducting data quality control;
- Should have knowledge in Data entry;
- Very good typing speed;
- File management programming;
