About GIRL-H Project:
Girls Improving Resilience through Livelihoods and Health (GIRL-H) Bridge fund is a year, multi-country program to be implemented in Kenya, Uganda, and Nigeria that seeks to continue improving the well-being of adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) and boys/men by increasing the access to skills and knowledge, health resources, formal education, and economic opportunities. GIRL-H also fosters an enabling environment by working with communities to transform unhealthy social norms and create opportunities for girls to access education and economic opportunities. Key to GIRL-H is a robust learning and research agenda that reaches across three countries to contribute to the evidence base on what works to secure access to opportunities for adolescent girls within the most marginalized communities and to better understand their contribution to household resilience. This evidence and learning will be shared to elevate Mercy Corps’ influence in the adolescent girl space and to bolster fundraising efforts to scale the model. In coordination with the GIRL-H Gender & Youth and Adolescents team, the GIRL-H Program Officer will support the Program Manager in the routine implementation of the GIRL program activities.
Job Summary: This is a new position for the program that looks to boost the profile of GIRL-H works internally with the agency and with external stakeholders. The Communications officer will craft a communications plan in support of key messages telling the GIRL-H story creatively and innovatively to a wide and diverse audience. They will guide team members and partners on storytelling, photo-taking, and documenting learning. The Communications officer will play a critical role in the program’s final year ensuring clear, consistent, and strategic messaging allows for a smooth exit from communities and with key stakeholders.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Strategy and Planning
- Led the development and implementation of a creative communications strategy and plan for the GIRL-H during its final year of implementation.
- Craft key messages and identify critical components of GIRL-H’s story for sharing with a wide and diverse audience, including staff, partners, government, and donors.
- Represent GIRL-H and Mercy Corps Uganda in strategic fora.
- Ensure adherence to GIRL-H branding and communication guidelines.
Team Engagement
- Work with the program and GIRL-H leadership team to develop internal communications messages and materials for the program visibility.
- Build the capacity of staff and partner team members to identify and exploit storytelling opportunities.
- Sensitize staff and partner team members on GIRL-H’s story and communications strategy.
Event Management
- Work with the RMEL team to design a series of learning events to effectively communicate GIRL-H’s story to diverse stakeholders.
- Liaise with the media before, during, and after events.
Risk Management
- Working with senior management, quickly identify potential risks and provide advice on communications strategies to address these.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant for the Communication Officer job at Mercy Corps should hold a bachelor’s degree in communications, Media, Marketing, Public Relations or equivalent.
- Two to three years of experience in Communications and/or Media Engagement for INGOs.
- Advanced computer skills and administrative experience (Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, design applications)
- Strong facilitation skills to deliver training to diverse groups
- Excellent writing and editing skills in English
- Strong ability to efficiently prioritize competing demands with attention to detail
- Creative and influential leadership skills
- Ability to speak local languages of areas of operation an advantage
- A successful candidate will be a self-starter with the ability to work both independently and in collaboration with a team, be able to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously and manage a variety of diverse details.
- He/she must have the ability to occasionally work evenings or weekend hours.
