The Medical Research Council (MRC UK) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts.
Job Summary: The Accounts Officer Banking will assist in providing financial support to various aspects in the accounts department which include Petty cash management and cashiering, to assist in producing monthly cash and bank reconciliations, issuing travel approved cash advances and following for accountability.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Reviewing, posting, and maintaining monthly payroll for LESO staff;
- Reviewing and posting information in Navision regarding staff loans, advances, overtime, refunds, leave days, and allowances;
- Enter journals in the accounting system (Navision) for both core and project operations;
- Prepare and submit monthly returns/remittances due to NSSF, URA, and LST as per statutory requirements to the relevant authorities;
- Prepare periodic financial reports to grant project leaders on payroll-related costs and timesheets. On a quarterly basis, to advise Project leaders on remaining annual leave days for the staff;
- Initiate and prepare cheque and online payments. Ensure proper documentation and matching of documents and procured items before payment is affected for invoices;
- Maintain and ensure the safe custody of physical financial documents, especially payroll related documentation.
- Provide support during internal and project audits by availing of requested documentation.
- Petty cash payments and administration;
- Supporting year-end audits by picking the necessary audit evidence;
- Accruing necessary project expenses as raised by the senior accountant; and,
- Any additional role as suggested by the supervisor.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Commerce, or Business Administration;
- Professional Accountant qualification (ACCA, ICPAU) working towards full qualification;
- Additional Accounting qualifications
- Two years of consecutive working experience in a similar role in a fast-paced and dynamic medical research organization;
- Experience of planning and coordinating change and transformation in the department;
- Good working knowledge of MS Office applications;
- Should possess knowledge working with MS Dynamics Navision ERP packages;
- Excellent skills with analytical tools, including MS Excel analytical tools, donor specific templates, etc.;
- Excellent knowledge of ERP and accounting software – MS Dynamics, AGRESSO;
- Good written and verbal communication abilities in the English language, including ability to provide information for briefing;
- Good inter-personnel and negotiating skills, with ability to nurture internal partnerships across programs and departments;
- Ability to present ideas and information in a clear and persuasive manner;
- Good team-working skills;
- Able to work independently in a faced-paced and dynamic environment; and,
- Proactive and pays attention to detail.
