Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.
Job Summary: The Senior Statistician shall be responsible for compiling and analyzing research/general clinic data at the IDI. He/she must be a diverse individual, showing broad technical, organizational, and communication skills, and be capable of working individually and in a team environment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- You will operate in a multi-disciplinary team comprising clinical and basic scientists with the support of senior statisticians and epidemiologists based at IDI and partner institutions worldwide.
- You will contribute to the design of trials and quality observational studies, support the development and deployment of statistical tools applicable to a broad range of clinical and laboratory-based research and conduct analyses of data.
- Advise and assist the research team on study design and data analysis
- Supervise and mentor junior Statisticians
- Perform independent statistical analyses on data generated by the project and assist in communicating the findings in peer-reviewed publications or reports.
- Carry out independent statistical analyses of clinical trials, under the supervision of the Head of Statistics unit; generate regular data safety monitoring committee reports and produce statistical reports.
- Advise and assist the research teams on study design and sample size in preparation of grant applications
- Manage the introduction and updating of Standard Operating Procedures for data processing and statistical matters as necessary.
- Contribute to the development of trial protocols, the design of the case report forms and databases in a multi-disciplinary environment.
- Contribute to the development of grant proposals
- Advise and support non-statistical researchers with regard to basic statistics and statistical analyses
- Follow STROBE and CONSORT statements for analyses of observational and clinical trial data respectively.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant should preferably hold a relevant university education, with a minimum of a master’s degree in statistics or a related field.
- Ability to produce statistics for clinical management and research
- Ability to process, analyze, and present study results in a quality publishable format
- Experience in database design and data management
- Proficient in statistical analysis software eg. R, Python, STATA, etc.
- Experience in the development of Data Science models is an added advantage
- Should possess an updated certificate in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Human Subject Protection (HSP)
