Job Summary: The Gender & Protection Assistant will support mainstreaming of gender equality in all livelihood and resilience activities. Provide advice, guidance and follow-up in relation to protection and gender aspects of the Beneficiary Feedback Mechanism and Targeting. Prepare tools and set up a system allowing regular monitoring and reporting on the project related gender and protection issues.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- He/she shall be responsible for supporting and incorporating gender perspective in all livelihood and resilience activities.
- Ensure the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.
- He/she shall participate in Planning & Organizing: Develop clear goals that are consistent with agreed gender and protection project strategies.
- Support the gender and protection unit in Identifying priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required.
- Support the identification and analysis of protection issues and trends.
- Identify and respond appropriately to beneficiaries with protection needs including through referrals, case management, and emergency as they evolve.
- Work with women, men, girls and boys to identify their needs, interests and priorities, and where possible, adapt livelihoods activities according to these to ensure activities offered are culturally appropriate and meet the needs of target population and project goals.
- The Gender and protect assistant shall be responsible for supporting gender mainstreaming and proactive technical support to the livelihoods project/organization.
- S/he will work with all departments, line managers and partners to ensure that gender equity principles are incorporated into all policies and activities implemented.
- He/she shall be responsible for performing threat, risk and vulnerability assessments to protect their beneficiaries both in refugee and host communities and detect and attempt to deter any suspicious or criminal activities in the areas of operation.
- He/she shall participate in Identifying gender differences and the underlying causes of gender inequalities within the livelihood and Resilience project.
- Participate in providing advice and support to the Project Team to ensure that all project activities are implemented with gender sensitive and protection-integrated approaches, with the needs of women, girls, boys and men considered.
- Participate in coordinating the implementation and monitoring of programs ensuring that identified protection needs, including an Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) approach, are adequately addressed;
- Support in providing policy guidance and operational support to HFU and partners on all protection related issues;
- Promote confidence building and conflict resolution among populations of concern (POCs), refugee local authorities, and host communities;
- Support Gender and Protection Officer in preparing training materials and providing trainings for project staff on gender and protection mainstreaming.
- Participate in building up a collaborative network of peers, government agencies and other local NGOs engaged within the settlement and host communities in issues related to gender & protection and coordinate and collaborate on research, programming and advocacy.
- Ensure close interaction with the M&E team to ensure that M&E tools and practices are gender sensitive and gender segregated indicators are development and measured
- Participating in identifying protection gaps and concerns faced by the beneficiaries; in particular women and children of the affected communities and share the information with central office;
- Support in preparing training materials and provide training for project staff on gender and protection mainstreaming
- Collaborate with other project staff to ensure referrals to other services such as psychosocial support mental health and education/livelihoods interventions;
- Follow up the referrals with relevant GBV/child protection actors in order to ensure the target communities protection rights;
- Attend and participate in trainings identified/ organized by your supervisor;
- Participate in preparing tools and set up a system allowing regular monitoring and reporting on the project related gender and protection issues.
- Participate in project resource mobilization.
- Engage in Research and easements tailored to project success. • Perform any other related tasks as required by the supervisor.
Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, and Zero tolerance to fraud
- Actively promote PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse and zero tolerance to fraud) standards within Hunger Fighters Uganda and amongst beneficiaries served.
Compliance & Ethics
- Promotes and encourages a culture of compliance and ethics throughout Hunger Fighters Uganda.
- As applicable to the position, maintains a clear understanding of Hunger Fighters Uganda’s and donor compliance and ethics standards and adheres to those standards.
- Conduct work with the highest level of integrity.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Bachelor degree in Social Sciences, Gender Studies, Community Development, or relevant field is required.
- At least three years of experience in protection /Gender mainstreaming positions preferably in Humanitarian NGOs.
- Knowledge of gender and protection in humanitarian and resilience settings, including gender-based violence, humanitarian policy issues, and their linkage with wash
- Proficiency in MS Office (MS Excel and MS PowerPoint, in particular)
- Excellent English, Kinyarwanda, Kinyabwisha and Swahili languages (writing and speaking) are required.
- Good reporting skills.
