The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. UNHCR’s mandate under the Statute of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is to lead and co-ordinate action for international protection to refugees; seek permanent solutions for the problems of refugees and safeguard refugee rights and well-being. UNHCR has an additional mandate concerning issues of statelessness, as it is given a designated role under Article 11 of the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.
Job Summary: UNHCR’s Communications staff need to cultivate a deep understanding of the organization’s target audiences, as well as editorial and journalistic standards. Additionally, they must be attentive to protection concerns and political sensitivities, and focused on communicating successfully with key demographics.
As an intern, you will have the opportunity to engage in various aspects of communications work, including communication strategy, media relations, multimedia content creation, social media engagement and graphics designing, public outreach, fundraising, and brand management. The Communications Intern will support the Communications team in various tasks related to communication strategy, media relations, multimedia content creation, social media engagement and graphics designing, public outreach, fundraising, and brand management.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- The Communications Intern will support the communications team to conduct research and identify where to get the best content to lead the narrative about refugees, generate empathy and mobilize action. Additionally, she/he will manage the organization’s social media platforms. This will involve addressing inquiries and ensuring prompt and accurate responses.
- The Communications Intern will actively contribute to content gathering missions by capturing videos and photographs. She/he will work with the Communications team to edit and produce compelling videos and photos for dissemination on various social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
- The Communications Intern will play a key role in monitoring the progress of UNHCR content publication on key events and activities on all media platforms. They will assist in ensuring timely and accurate dissemination of important information related to key events and activities.
- The Communications Intern will closely work with the Communications focal person to develop innovative and impactful visibility concepts for UNHCR and its donors. This will involve creating visually appealing materials such as banners, posters, brochures, and other visual aids to effectively communicate UNHCR’s activities.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The applicant for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Communications Intern job must have the following minimum qualifications:
- Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
- Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.
Desirable qualifications and skills
- Content creation: The intern should possess skills in capturing videos and photographs to contribute to content gathering missions. They should be able to work collaboratively with the Communications team to edit and produce compelling visual content for dissemination on social media platforms.
- Social media management: The intern should be proficient in managing social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. This involves not only posting content but also addressing inquiries and ensuring timely and accurate responses to maintain engagement with the audience
NOTE: An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.
- Research skills: The intern should have the ability to conduct research and identify relevant sources for obtaining content that effectively leads the narrative on refugees, generates empathy, and mobilizes action. This includes finding credible information and sources related to forced displacement
- The intern should possess strong writing skills to effectively convey messages, create engaging content, and tell compelling stories. This includes the ability to write clear, concise, and impactful captions, posts, and articles for social media platforms and other communication materials.
- Videography: The intern should have basic knowledge and skills in videography to capture high-quality videos. This includes understanding framing, composition, lighting, and audio recording techniques. Proficiency in editing software such as Adobe Premier Pro, Final Cut and Canva to produce professional-looking videos/graphics is an advantage.
