About Walimu:
Walimu is a leading health research, policy advocacy and scaling organization in Uganda. Our team of 170, all Ugandan, works with a global team of research scientists from universities such as UCSF, Yale and LSTM to conduct studies that test whether interventions save patient lives. We then work with the Ministry of Health to scale successful interventions nationwide. Our work is made possible by a diverse set of funders, including Bill & Melinda Gates Foundations, World Health Organization, US Agency for International Development, US National Institutes of Health, Wellcome Trust and others. Job Summary: Walimu has grown rapidly in recent years. With a staff today of 170 and operations across Uganda, we are searching for a leader who can grow our human resources operation and deliver a first-rate experience for our team. As HR manager, you will be our point person for designing and delivering solutions for recruiting, onboarding, remuneration and benefits, training, retention, performance management, safeguarding and compliance. Your work will enable our research teams and scaling teams to deliver, and in turn reduce morbidity and mortality.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
HR leadership – 10%
- As our HR leader, you will work with the broader operations team as well as our research and scaling teams to identify and solve challenges and ensure we are supporting all our people.
- You will be a member of the management team, and participate in the broader processes to execute and improve our work.
HR systems development – 30%
- You will be responsible for managing and improving our HR systems.
- You will undertake projects to enable us to deliver even better for our projects and people. For example, you might undertake a project to build out our training offerings for staff, enabling them to upskill and advance their career.
- You will collaborate with the Operations Director and other senior management to identify top-priority investments.
HR operations – 50%
- You will conduct HR operations: recruiting employees, conducting onboarding and training, managing information, overseeing appraisals and other routine employee actions, offboarding and so on.
HR compliance and safeguarding – 10%
- You will oversee our human resources related compliance work, collaborating with other compliance leaders throughout the organization. In addition, you will ensure implementation of key policies, such as our safeguarding policy.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree
- Substantial experience working in a sophisticated human resources department
