The National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU) is an umbrella organization promoting the rights of Persons with disabilities in Uganda with the vision of having “A Just and Fair Society where Persons with Disabilities live a Prosperous and Dignified life”. We exist to advocate for the rights of Persons with Disabilities in a unified voice for improved livelihoods.
Job Purpose: The Communications Assistant will collect, compile, package, and disseminate information internally within NUDIPU to maintain a positive image and increase awareness and understanding of disability issues and NUDIPU’s work. S/he will also be responsible for managing and maintaining NUDIPU’s database and setting up and maintaining the Management Information Systems (MIS).
Job Summary: The job holder will be facilitating the communication of key corporate messages within NUDIPU, effectively managing key communications channels including the website, social media, newsletters, e-mail newsgroups, policy briefs, and intranet, and working with colleagues in planning and implementing NUDIPU programmes, publicity, and fundraising activities. This position will report to the manager’s rights and policy.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Programme Planning, development, and implementation
- Participate in the development and implementation of programmes and projects to ensure adequate provision for the information and communication needs of the organization.
- Initiate new idea/concepts, and materials that are relevant for programme implementation.
- Participate in review of the Strategic plan ensuring continued relevance in the rapidly changing environment.
- Ensure programme deliverables meet quality standards and seek proactive guidance from relevant experts.
- Participate in programme planning and review meetings as appropriate.
- Write programme reports and document lessons learned to facilitate learning.
- Support and participate in the advocacy activities and events of the organization.
- Conduct capacity building activities for partners/stakeholders/members as deemed necessary.
- Participate in defining programme and financial objectives, targets, and monitoring processes (collect, collate, and share relevant project information) in line with the programme and organizational M&E framework.
- Identify existing and potential funding opportunities and participate in the technical aspects of project proposal development process.
- Conduct research in relevant pertinent issues to build a body of knowledge and influence change at various levels.
- Review and periodically report on the progress of information and communication initiatives and interventions.
- Support the advocacy team in designing and executing advocacy interventions and initiatives.
Communication
- Develop a communications strategy for NUDIPU.
- Manage the day-to-day internal communications to ensure NUDIPU’s visibility and support external communications.
- Regularly update the NUDIPU website and other social media platforms e.g. face book, Instagram, twitter, and blog.
- Manage and maintain NUDIPU’s strategic relations with the media, coordinate media related activities, engagements and events including preparing press statements, articles and participating in media programmes.
- Provide technical guidance to the other colleagues involved in communications activities.
- Ensure that NUDIPU communication outputs are of a high standard and respond to the needs of the target audience and are delivered within agreed budget and timelines.
- In conjunction with the Administrative Assistant, identify and respond to the information and communication capacity needs of members and partners.
Documentation
- Manage the production, publication, and dissemination of NUDIPU information materials, including coordinating the design and printing processes.
- Prepare and publish NUDIPU Newsletters on a quarterly basis.
- Coordinate production of high-quality materials including IEC, brochures, fact sheets, reports, research reports, posters, and videos.
- Support the programme team in documenting and disseminating success stories and organizational models.
- Ensure compliance with brand guidelines for all publication produced.
- Develop a publications catalogue and keep electronic and hard copies of all publications.
Other tasks and Responsibilities
- Participate in the organization’s key events and represent the organization in relevant fora.
- Provide technical guidance, couching and mentoring to staff and volunteers.
- Support and participate in other programme area activities when required.
- Ensure that resources under his/her care are properly deployed and utilized.
- Ensure vulnerable people (aged, youth, women & children) participate in NUDIPU activities.
- Undertake all necessary actions to protect and promote the image and brand of NUDIPU.
- Carry out own administrative functions including timely filing and the use of Word for the production of own correspondences and reports.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in mass communication, information technology, Journalism, or any related field. A master’s degree is desirable.
- Training in Information Management is a must.
- Technical skills and interpersonal skills
- Ability to develop knowledge management systems and writing and research skills. Good office ICT skills, including social media and media, and public relations skills.
- Knowledge of disability issues and human rights.
- Ability to make wise decisions, provide effective feedback, and use social media platforms.
- Comfortable working in multi-cultural settings and the ability to work calmly under pressure.
- Effective interpersonal skills to work with colleagues, partners, stakeholders, and donors.
Industry Experience.
- Three years of work experience in communications, information management, and Information technology in a busy organization
- Experience in Journalism and information technology will be an added advantage.
- Experience while working with NGOs, INGOs
- Good knowledge of development dynamics, disability interventions.
- Proficiency in use of standard computer software applications.
- Experience in the development and maintenance of Information Management Systems.
