About US:

The Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau (UPMB) was founded in 1957 as a registered faith based Non-Governmental Organization under the Trustees Incorporation Act (CAP 165) as Registered Trustees of the Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau. UPMB brings together Protestant Churches in Uganda involved in Provision of Health Services. It serves as a link between Government and / or Development Partners and UPMB-Member Institutions and provides support to its members through capacity strengthening, coordination, lobbying and Advocacy, public relations and translation of government policies.

 

Job Summary:  The Business Development Specialist will be responsible for supporting the fundraising goals of all program departments and in assisting the Director of Program Development and Management in executing UPMB’s Resource Mobilization strategy. The Business Development Specialist will lead business development and fundraising for UPMB, including gathering business intelligence; partnering with program/technical leads to develop and further client relationships, identifying and developing opportunities, partners and contacts; directly contributing to scoping, capture, and proposal development; and strategic networking and relationship building

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategy, positioning, and capture

  • Set goals and develop plans for UPMB business and revenue growth.
  • Develop and regularly update UPMB resource mobilization tools, including UPMB profile, project briefs and summaries, donor profile matrix, strategic plan, etc. for immediate use during resource mobilization opportunities.
  • Analyze UPMB strategic plans, reports, partner engagements and identify potential interventions/projects to inform resource mobilization strategy.
  • Identify funders through contacting potential partners; researching donors and business opportunities.
  • Research and profile donors and prospective funding interests that fall within UPMB mandate.
  • Facilitate communications with donors and keep Management informed of the progress.
  • Source new partnering opportunities to advance goals and bring them forward to UPMB leadership to ensure alignment.
  • Conduct regular (i.e. daily) tracking of potential funding opportunities.
  • Maintain organizational pipeline of potential opportunities.
  • Prepare presentations on the funding/business opportunities and facilitate organizational go/no-go decision-making to decide if UPMB will pursue.

Proposal development

  • Collaborate with others in the Programs Department and other technical experts in development of assigned proposals, defining and managing roles and responsibilities of their contributions within the proposal development process.
  • Facilitate liaison with prime organizations and partner negotiation for teaming arrangements and any requested deliverables.
  • Schedule proposal kick-off meetings with team members, develop proposal writing outline calendars and manage team to deliver on-time results.
  • Facilitate kickoff and subsequent proposal check-in meetings with proposal team and circulate notes and action items.
  • Support key personnel recruitment through communicating with candidates, scheduling interviews, and finalizing personnel materials (i.e. references, biodatas, LOCs, etc).
  • May be called on to draft, review, and/or and edit sections of the technical or cost volume, such as past performance section, management section, organizational chart, and budget notes.
  • Manage production of proposal submission to ensure quality and on-time delivery of all document proposal complies with funder requirements.

Organizational knowledge management and learning

  • Organize meetings and orient/train staff in business development and funding opportunities for UPMB.
  • Maintain full records of all donations by maintaining database and paper files.
  • Network and collaborate with other similar organizations in grant writing and management.
  • Perform any other duty as may be assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Social sciences, medicine, economics, development studies or humanities, Business development
  • A minimum of five years of experience in Business development, including fundraising and proposal writing
  • Strong team player with a history of working well across the organization
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong team building and strategic planning skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Good networking and advocacy skills.
  • Drive and self-motivation
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Understanding of UPMB donor regulations and requirements, familiarity with other international donors (e.g USAID, CDC BFTW, Global Fund, EU etc.
  • Working experience in fundraising and financing interlinkages with other sectors and development partners
  • Proven track record of working with rapidly changing deadlines and having an ability to move in a fast-paced environment
