Lutheran World Federation (LWF) Uganda is part of the LWF World Service and we are currently supporting Congolese and South-Sudanese refugees living in settlements in the districts of Kamwenge, Adjumani, Moyo, Kyangwali and Lamwo respectively.
Job Summary: Under the supervision of the WASH Officer, the engineering intern is to work in close coordination with relevant stakeholders in the districts to ensure ensures that water, sanitation, and hygiene programs, and awareness are implemented effectively, professionally, and in accordance with the culture and practices of the local population.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
WASH Programming/Implementation:
- Ensuring quality and integrity of implementation, including adherence to technical guidelines, administrative systems, and established deadlines.
- Day-to-day coordination to ensure timely implementation of activities under the program in relation to water, sanitation and hygiene promotion in the local context;
- Provide technical guidance in the designing, planning, management and implementation of the water and sanitation programme;
- Contributing to contingency planning for possible WASH emergency response if required;
- Contributing to the preparation of internal and external reports for the NGO and donors, including expenditure plans and situation reports
Representation:
- Collaborating and coordinating with the government, NGOs, and other relevant agencies on WASH issues at district level with your supervisor;
- Participating in district and WASH meetings and other relevant humanitarian/recovery coordination meetings;
Team Management:
- Supervising and managing the community-based water and sanitation team in the field; including Water User Committees, Handpump mechanics, VHTs, etc
- Management of several water sanitation teams activated in parallel to drill boreholes, install the water points and educated and trains the community on how to maintain them and use them;
Technical Monitoring;
- Day-to-day follow up of program activities;
- Monitoring all water and sanitation sites to ensure adherence to technical and quality standards;
- Reception of the hardware (new boreholes, rehabilitated /repaired water sources and systems and latrines, pumps, tools box);
- Responsible for ensuring the project is running in accordance with the project plan and to time;
Internal reporting:
- Assist in designing and implementing surveys and assessments related to the field of water and sanitation when needed
- Selecting, modifying or designing appropriate water and sanitation infrastructure, and suitable community-based maintenance and repair systems;
- Designing and ensuring the effective promotion of appropriate hygiene and sanitation messages;
- Preparing reports in line with the reporting schedule and to donor requirements;
- Designing and conducting training for community representatives, and partners on water supply, maintenance, and hygiene and sanitation extension.
- Developing and documenting written protocols and standard operating procedures for the water and sanitation programmes.
Other:
- Undertaking any other related tasks, or other responsibilities as may be assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant should have have completed the final year of a Bachelor’s degree/Ordinary Diploma/Higher Diploma in Civil Engineering/Construction/Water Engineering/Environmental Engineering/Public Health engineering course from a university or technical institution that is accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education during the past year.
- Should be interested in pursuing a career in the WASH sector in rural water supply and the O&M of rural water supply.
- Should have a completion certificate/testimonial showing they have completed their course
- Must be fluent in English, knowledge of any local language particular to area of operation is a plus.
