The Medical Research Council (MRC UK) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts.
Job Summary: The Field Worker Interviewer will work with the Principal Investigator, Trial Manager, Research Team Leads and other trial staff on the MENISCUS (Menstrual health interventions, schooling and mental health symptoms among Ugandan students) study. This school-based cluster and randomized trial will evaluate the effectiveness of a menstrual health intervention on a range of health, educational and wellbeing outcomes among students attending 60 Ugandan secondary schools. The trial will be conducted in Wakiso and Kalungu districts. The fieldworker will report directly to the Project Team Leader. He/she will engage in field based activities including collecting quantitative data from students and seeking informed parental consent and student assent.
The fieldworker will have a minimum of one-year experience in conducting fieldwork including quantitative data collection from participants (ideally electronic data collection), and collection of informed consent/assent from study participants, ideally including adolescents.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Principle Responsibilities; –
- Administer study information to eligible participants and their parents;
- Seek informed consent and assent from parents, teachers and students for the MENISCUS trial;
- Participate in the recruitment of study participants and administer study questionnaires and other study tools using tablet computers and paper;
- Collect, enter and safely keep information obtained from the field both electronically and on paper, working closely with the project team leader;
- Transcribe and translate all data collected from the schools and parents;
- Keep documentation of all field activities and participate in writing reports;
- Manage field based project equipment, materials and data;• Ensure timely and accurate completion of study forms;
- Maintain and regularly update the database which contains the contact details and information of the participants;
- Attend MENISCUS project meetings and workshops as required;
- Follow up study participants to remind them of appointments, to inform them of study activities, or to carry out study procedures, according to SOPs;
- Carry out desk-based research on selected topics as directed by the project team leader; and,
- Perform other related duties as assigned to you.
Financial Responsibilities; –
- Ensure proper accountability of project resources in line with MRC/UVRI and LSHTM policies.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Social sciences or related;
- Certificate in Good Clinical Practice or Research Ethics;
- A minimum of two years of experience working in a research-based organization;
- One year of experience in conducting fieldwork including quantitative data collection from participants;
- Experience delivering and collecting informed consent from study participants;
- Experience in electronic data capture;
- Experience in community mobilisation and interviewing;
- Experience working on adolescent health research studies;
- Good computer skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook);
- Organized with excellent attention to detail;
- Excellent networking, and communication skills (written and verbal);
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
- Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines; and,
- Interest in adolescent health
