Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.
About CAMO-NET:
Centres for Antimicrobial Optimisation Network (CAMO-NET) is a Wellcome Trust funded project at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) that aims to address the global impact of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) on human health via optimised antimicrobial use. It will establish a sustainable global research ecosystem across high-income countries (HICs) and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Job Summary: The Capacity Building Coordinator will implement CAMONET project activities research-related scholarships/fellowships and training. The coordinator is responsible for developing annual calendars to recruit and evaluate Research fellows’ milestones and productivity. In addition, the coordinator is responsible for organizing research-related training and dissemination platforms. She/he must be a diverse individual, show organizational and communication skills, and be capable of working individually and in a global team environment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Creates systems for the implementation of CAMONET capacity-building activities
- Draws up adverts for trainee hires
- Arranges meetings for the hire and evaluation of trainees’ progress
- Supports the contraction processes
- Orientate new Trainees and scientists.
- Acts as Administrator for all the CAMONET capacity-building projects
- Support and Maintain all Confidential documentation for the CAMONET team
- Oversee Research fellow activities and track progress
- Attend disciplinary committees when the need arises
- Oversee all the CAMONET operational Capacity building activities in this function
Organize and coordinate Placements for research capacity strengthening
Research Fellow placements
- Identify, recruit and contract orient fellows and scientists from partner sites based on the needs’ assessment, and attachment to other CAMONET sites.
- Draws ToR and schedules
- Offer logistical support for on-site or online mentorship to implement skills-building projects using structured methodology and deliverables approved by the CTH. Such as scientists will be placed in a laboratory to learn how to develop bioanalytical assays or advanced statistical methods or database development.
Visiting Expert placement
- Plan and Coordinate expert placements of scientists from one CAMONET institution to another while following structured methodology and deliverables approved by the CTH
- Draws ToR and schedules
- Support Scientists during the development and scheduling of training programs in their areas of expertise as well as soft skills for junior researchers.
- Offer mentorship and logistical support to scientists and junior staff to provide career guidance.
Coordinate monthly peer-to-peer seminars using the IDI Research Forum Model to highlight topical research issues faced by scientists selected by the CTH from the different CAMONET partner sites.
- Solicits speakers and organizes sessions
- Support e-posters designs and solicit invitations for participation
- Ensure and maintain correspondence with the potential speakers
- Support logistical needs as may be applicable
Organize Annual Global workshops on a rolling basis at the partner site leading a specific CAMO-Net theme with broad representation from global subject matter experts within and outside the CAMO-Net space.
- Draw up programs and schedules
- Solicits speakers and organizes sessions
- Support e-posters designs and solicit invitations for participation
- Keep timely correspondence with the potential speakers
- Support logistical requirements as may be applicable
Provide support to CAMO-NET thematic leads to review research concepts and develop learning objectives for both the main workshop and more focused break-out groups on network members’ needs.
- Organize logistics for virtual, physical, or blended Workshops to foster networking, dissemination of current updates
- Solicits speakers and organizes sessions
- Support e-posters designs and solicit invitations for participation
- Ensure and maintain correspondence with the potential speakers
- Support logistical needs as may be applicable
Identify potential collaborators with other research capacity building institutions for future related projects
- Attend all meetings and networking events.
Conduct regular evaluation of the proposed CAMONET activities and performs quality improvement initiatives as follows:
- Needs assessment: Strength of consensus amongst CAMONET partners (represented by the CTH Steering Committee) on priority gaps across sites and strengths within the network and non-network sites.
- Programme design: Strength of consensus amongst CAMONET partners (represented by the CTH Steering Committee) on a common definition of a complete package of training and capacity-building activities that address major gaps across the AMR cycle.
- Curriculum adaptation and/or development: Sound review leading to the production of relevant curricula to international standards backed by modern teaching aids, materials, and methods.
- Joint development of training materials and courses: High-quality materials produced (endorsed by trainee evaluations and international QA).
- Conducting training: Participation by at least 300 trainees; and their evaluation of the trainings
- Effectiveness of training: Number and quality of projects implemented by trainees and publications resulting from implementation.
- Impact of training: Dissemination of actionable policy or practice research findings as well as development and adoption of resulting innovations by targeted users.
- M&E reports: Timely production and presentation of reports and demonstrated feedback on course design and delivery.
Helps in the organization of trainee networking events
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate trainee annual networking events, work plans, and themes
- Offers logistical support for
Acts as liaison between scholars and management
- Supervise and support all scholarly administrative requests and requirements
- Support and creates enabling environments that foster and nurture a good working relationship between trainees and CAMONET leadership.
Prepares program reports and summaries for all capacity-building programs and activities
- Quarterly reports
- Interim Reports
- Annual and funder reporting requirements
- Ensures funder reporting requirements and submissions on time.
Keeps track of and advises on trainee expenditures
- Advise and monitor trainee budgets and expenditure
- Ensures compliance and accountability by scholars
- Procurement of all trainee requirements on time (Tuition, Lab, and scholarly supplies)
- Supports grants officers on overall budget compliance and tracking
Organization of trainee networking events
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate trainee annual networking events, work plans, and themes
- Offers logistical support

Support trainees’ needs and ensure that:
- Trainees comply with the expected Ethical and regulatory standards
- Receive Statistical support and IT support
- Offer guidance on how to navigate and comply with CAMONET expectations
- Offer guidance on administrative needs and requirements
- Access to psychosocial and counseling support when required.
Maintains an archive of research trainees and their achievements
- Ensure regular updates of scholar outputs; publications, awards, and success stories
- Updates confidential folder and
- Tracks TMIS trainee submissions and any administrative requirements of the system.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate must hold a Masters in health-related course preferably in (Medicine, Laboratory Sciences, Public Health, Nursing) and another related field is required
- Degree in health-related course preferably in (Medicine, Laboratory Sciences, Public Health, Nursing) and another related field is required.
- Diploma or advanced certificate in project planning management in the health sector
- At least eight years (8) experience in research capacity building programs/projects
- GCP and HSP experience
- Knowledge management and utilisation experience related to Wellcome Trust funded projects for at least 2 years will be an added advantage.
- Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc) and advance knowledge of spreadsheet and database packages, experience in handling of web-based management systems.
- Proven ability to coordinate, plan and execute capacity building projects with diverse range of partners.
