About US:

The Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda (IRA) was established under section 14 of the Insurance Statute 1996 now The Insurance Act, (Chap213) Laws of Uganda, 2000 (Insurance Act) which came into effect on 4th April 1996 and commenced operations in April 1997. The establishment of the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda was a consequence of Government’s adoption of the liberalization and privatization policies which ended its role of directly engaging in the provision of goods and services and taking on the role of supervisor or regulator.

Job Summary:  The Legal Clerk will primarily perform routine duties involved in litigation and other legal processes and prepare a variety of forms and documents as may be instructed from time to time.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Pick, serve and file all legal documents.
• Assist in monitoring enactments of laws and regulations.
• Prepare affidavit of service, briefs and reviews for use by the Authority.
• Review briefs submitted to the legal department.
• Receives and registers caveats and other documents for any land transaction, registration and maintains all pertinent records for Real Estate.
• Conduct legal research for the legal department and write opinions based on research.
• Follow up Court process in the Insurance Appeals Tribunal and other Courts of Law, and communicates with Counsel regarding case management and procedural requirements.
• Assist with the maintenance of legal documents, research laws, Court decisions, documents or other information related to cases before Court.
• Review pending litigation and maintain a diary for the Legal Department.
• Carry out any other duty as shall be assigned from time to time.

Key Performance Indicators

• Compliance of the Authority to the Court and other deadlines.
• Prompt registration of caveats and other land transactions.
• Timely legal memoranda.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• Hold at least a Diploma in law.
• Personal presentation
• Knowledge of legal and regulatory provisions
• Decision making
• Analytical skills
• Communication skills
• Interpersonal skills
