Team Purpose: The Programmes and Influencing team will guarantee the humanitarian response support to countries and cluster. This team will be assessing and promoting linkages with strategic programme and influencing goals of OiA. They will lead on the rights resilience and nexus agendas, transformative partnerships, as well as programme quality, learning and accountability. The director and their team will ensure that the Africa Platform works closely with and contributes to Oxfam’s worldwide campaigns, ensuring that Oxfam empowers people across the continent to take action on inequality, climate and gender justice.

 

The thematic leads in the programmes and influencing team will lead in many of the areas like climate change, gender, economic justice, the emerging digital world and education among others and will have competencies in these specific thematic areas linked to the global strategic goals and horizon themes. Transformative Education is seen by Oxfam as an enabler to achieve a positive change in the thematica areas on which it focusses.

 

ABOUT ECPI:

Oxfam’s Education Community of Practice and Influence (ECPI) exists to strengthen transformative public education for all to fight inequality. ECPI aims to establish a firm and coherent foundation for spearheading Oxfam’s work on transformative education and inequality through enhancing links between programme and influencing work (across national, regional and global levels) and demonstrating how transformative education is an enabler that supports the achievement of Oxfam’s mission to fight inequality to end poverty and injustice. ECPI currently includes members from five continents and over 40 countries working at a range of levels within Oxfam.

 

Job Summary: To coordinate Oxfam’s Education Community of Practice and Influencing activities across the confederation, maximising opportunities to enable ECPI members, other Oxfam colleagues and relevant external partners to learn from and support each other. To strengthen links between ECPI members, other relevant actors and Oxfam campaigns and priorities to ensure that transformative education is recognised and actively used in programming as an enabler. This enabling role applies to Oxfam’s work in Enhanced Humanitarian Action as well as in all four change systems outlined in Oxfam’s Global Strategic Framework: Just Economies, Gender Justice, Climate Justice and Accountable Governance. To support ECPI to lead global education policy and advocacy work to promote high-quality gender-just transformative education systems that are resilient to crises, relevant to local, national and regional contexts and accessible to all. To support ECPI to build a diverse and sustainable network in which educationists and non-specialists in and beyond Oxfam can support one another to use transformative education as an enabler to fight inequality and end poverty and injustice.

 

The position will largely focus on ECPI’s global network and activities, but the postholder will also offer some support for interventions in Uganda and on the African continent as agreed by the wider Education Community of Practice and Influencing Coordination Team and/or Reference Group.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Be the ‘Go to’ person for information on ECPI and Oxfam’s work on transformative education globally, representing ECPI interests both within Oxfam and with relevant external partners.
  • Lead on coordination of transformative education policy across global ECPI, joining relevant internal and external meetings and identifying future opportunities to work with others.
  • Plan, convene, facilitate (or support others to facilitate) and report on virtual and real-life meetings with Oxfam colleagues and external partners to:
  • share knowledge, experience and evidence of the impact of transformative education
  • to support learning and development of stronger practice across the confederation
  • to promote south-to-south learning and exchange
  • to identify opportunities for influencing
  • to coordinate common transformative education initiatives with strong outcomes for young people that align with Oxfam’s aims
  • Support and organise mechanisms for improved access to technical support on transformative education and gender transformative education with and between ECPI members, the wider Oxfam confederation and relevant external partners.
  • Promote and facilitate links between Oxfam country teams, their partners and other relevant bodies and civil society working on similar transformative education themes.
  • Facilitate and be an active member of regular on-line ECPI Coordination Team and ECPI Reference Group meetings, regularly reviewing membership and terms of reference, sharing key outcomes with the wider ECPI network.
  • Gather transformative education impact stories and publish on the ECPI Hub website and in quarterly newsletters.
  • Ensure ECPI has an up-to-date presence on all Oxfam’s confederation-wide platforms and disseminate information and ideas arising from ECPI meetings and working groups.
  • Be an active member of relevant country, regional and continental teams/networks, maximizing on opportunities to advocate for the role of transformative education in achieving Oxfam’s goals.
  • Keep mailing lists and CRM for ECPI members up to date, regularly reaching out to potential new members.
  • Maintain ECPI Hub website and records on Oxfam Box, including updating the ECPI timeline.
  • Support global fundraising opportunities related to the coordination of ECPI
  • Seek and maintain a continental network with internal and external partners and institutions relevant to transformative education
  • Lead or contribute to selected policy and advocacy tasks and priorities on transformative education on the continent in strong collaboration with partners, ECPI policy group and Oxfam in Africa Policy and Programme Adviser Education.
  • Provide ad hoc support to global and Oxfam Uganda advocacy and policy work on transformative education as relevant.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal applicant must hold a Postgraduate degree from a recognised university in Social Sciences, Education or other related field; or a relevant Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university plus equivalent experience.
  • Approximately five years’ experience and understanding of transformative education policies, practices and/or social justice; proven experience with facilitation of international networks.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Fluent in both written and oral English.
  • Excellent ability to manage relationships with multiple stakeholders from different backgrounds and contexts and to build and maintain strong, diverse and inclusive networks.
  • Outstanding IT skills and proven ability to make full use of digital technology to run effective and inclusive multi-country online meetings.
  • Strong facilitation skills in a variety of on and off-line contexts.
  • Excellent organizational and planning abilities and a creative and innovative approach to a wide range of tasks and challenges both routine and complex.
  • Proven ability to demonstrate sensitivity to cultural differences and gender issues, as well as commitment to equal opportunities.
  • Ability to remain calm and work well under pressure, juggling multiple tasks and tight deadlines.
  • Flexible, adaptable and able to work effectively within a matrix team environment.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and GDPR.
  • Ability and willingness to travel occasionally.
  • Understanding and hands on experience of advocacy and/or campaigning
  • Ability to speak French or Spanish
  • Experience of working with young people in formal and/or informal education settings
  • Experience of living or working internationally
  • Ability to contribute to successful funding proposals
