Job Summary: DAI seeks Data Collection Assistants (short term) in field offices of Gulu, Mbale, Mbarara and Kotido for a five-year, $35 million dollar USAID-funded agriculture program. The Feed the Future Uganda Inclusive Agricultural Markets Activity (FtF IAM) works with agro-industry/ agribusiness firms, Government of Uganda institutions and agencies, and market actor organizations on creating efficiencies in cross-market functions that enhance systemic changes to sustainably increase incomes and improve the livelihoods of households through agriculture led inclusive economic growth. The Activity contributes to the Global Food Security Strategy (GFSS) Uganda Country Plan goal of reducing hunger, malnutrition, and poverty, as well as the USAID/Uganda Country Development Cooperation Strategy’s (CDCS) 2016-2021 five-year goal of strengthening Uganda’s systems to accelerate inclusive education, health, and economic outcomes. The Activity works throughout the FtF Uganda Zone of Influence (ZOI), which covers 38 districts spread across four regions of Uganda.
Job Summary: The data collection role will support partners in undertaking quarterly data collection so that the Activity meets its data quality and regularity needs. The Consultants will work under the supervision and guidance of the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Advisor. They will be based at regional offices, working for a maximum of 8 days a month.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the MEL Team in undertaking regular data collection from partners
- Work closely with Partners to identify and agree data collection period and the data to be collected
- On a quarterly basis visit each partner and collect agreed data; hold sessions with partners to gather any anecdotal/qualitative information relevant to the intervention/activity being implemented by the partner.
- Identify areas of data collection improvement and report as appropriate to the MEL advisor
- Support MEL team in cleaning and entering the data into appropriate data organization and analysis tools
- Support partners transcribe data that is in hard copy data collection tools into MS Excel templates
Key Deliverables:
- Monthly clean data sets in MS Excel templates on activities implemented by the partner
- Collated source documents for each milestones/deliverables submitted by the partner
- Monthly report on qualitative insights/changes in the market the partners are operating in

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Accounting, Development Studies or Business administration or equivalent.
- At least two years of relevant experience and progressive responsibility in data collection, market studies or administrative work.
- Experience in using MS Excel to do data analysis
- Experience *in data collection on a development programme is an added advantage.
- Ability to interpret information and communicate clearly with farmers and rural households required
- A good understanding of how business operates is a plus
- Fluency in English and in at least one other language spoken in any of the regions (Karamoja, Northern Uganda, Mt. Elgon and Southwestern Uganda) is required.
- Candidate should be living within one of the regions above. Supervisory Responsibilities: The Data Collection Assistant will have no supervisory responsibilities.
Reporting: The Data Collection Assistant reports to the MEL Advisor. Location of assignment: Gulu, Mbale, Mbarara and Kotido with required to travel to FtF IAM’s partners business locations in their areas of operation, which include Northern, Eastern, Southwestern and Karamoja regions of Uganda.
Period of Performance: December 1, 2022 through May 31, 2023
